Less than a fortnight ago, the Asia Cup got underway with Lahiru Thirimanne hitting a century and Lasith Malinga taking a five-wicket haul in a Sri Lankan win over Pakistan. On Saturday (March 8), the tournament ended with a nice touch of symmetry as the same actors reprised their roles with the same result. Malinga’s 5 for 56 ensured Pakistan was kept to a manageable total, after which Thirimanne stroked 101 in 108 balls to lead his side’s charge towards its fifth Asia Cup title – tying for the record of most trophies in the tournament with India. It also meant Sri Lanka maintained its spotless record in the tournament as well as in Bangladesh since late January, completing a… Read More →

Mathews shepherds nervy chase

Sri Lanka dug into its reserves of batting to pull out a hard-fought three-wicket win, maintaining its unbeaten record in Bangladesh since landing here in late January. Chasing Bangladesh’s sub-par total of 204 for 9, Sri Lanka overcame an extremely wobbly start and had Angelo Mathews (74 not out off 103) to thank for a calm knock under pressure that guided his side home with an over to spare on Thursday (March 6). Bangladesh’s search for an elusive first victory in 2014 continued, with another close defeat in the final Asia Cup league match. Mathews was joined by Chaturanga de Silva (44 off 52) when the score was 75 for 5, an 82-run stand off 16.2 overs stabilising Sri Lanka…. Read More →

Sangakkara takes Sri Lanka to Asia Cup final

Sri Lanka asserted its supremacy over Afghanistan on a sluggish surface at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, experience winning out against talent that is still raw. Sri Lanka had put on 253 for 6 after opting to bat on Monday (March 3), the initial part of the innings held together by Kumar Sangakkara’s broad blade. In the closing stages, Angelo Mathews took the fight to an inexperienced attack as the last four overs yielded 49 runs. The total proved too much for Afghanistan against an attack that used the conditions to good effect, ending in a comprehensive 129-run win. Sri Lanka thus marched into the final of the Asia Cup, collecting a bonus point after dismissing Afghanistan for 124 in 38.4 overs…. Read More →

Sangakkara ton condemns India to defeat

In a battle of spinners at Fatullah, it was only fitting that the match turned from one extreme to the other. Above everything towered Kumar Sangakkara, with an innings of calm and class, hitting 103 in 84 balls, while Ajantha Mendis and Sachithra Senanayake stole a march over R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as Sri Lanka sealed a thriller by two wickets in the final over on Friday (February 28). India had been kept to 264 for 9 at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, and Sri Lanka squeaked home in 49.2 overs, having lost Sangakkara an over before Thisara Perera struck the winning single. The win all but assured Sri Lanka of a spot in the final of the 2014… Read More →

Malinga keeps fighting Pakistan at bay

Pakistan did what Pakistan does, turning the opening match of the Asia Cup 2014 into a humdinger of a contest at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah, but in the end, despite a valiant innings from Misbah-ul-Haq, it fell short of Sri Lanka’s 296 for 6, ending with 284 all out in 48.5 overs, courtesy Lasith Malinga’s 5 for 52. The 12-run defeat was marked by some typically come-from-behind moments by Pakistan, but the defending champion couldn’t its their magic and go all the way on Tuesday (February 25). While Misbah was the tragic hero, ending with 73 off 84, and Umar Akmal showcased his full array of strokes in a 72-ball 74, the day belonged to a… Read More →
