Ishant, Ashwin bowl India to rare series victory

Virat Kohli after winning the test series in Sri Lanka

Test match victories, especially overseas, don’t always come easy. Test series wins away from home come even harder. India walked the hard road to success at the SSC ground, quelling formidable resistance from the indefatigable Angelo Mathews to script a come-from-behind series win on Sri Lankan soil. Not since Mohammad Azharuddin’s Class of 1993 had an India side returned home from the Emerald Isle with a series win to its name. Not since Sourav Ganguly’s Class of 2001 had India fought back from 0-1 down to emerge victorious in a three-Test series. Both boxes were ticked emphatically, Virat Kohli crowning his first full series as captain by leading India to a hard-earned 117-run victory in the final Test on a… Read More →

India strikes thrice as Sri Lanka stutters in chase of 386

After the madness of the previous day when 15 wickets tumbled for no discernible reason, a semblance of normalcy returned to the SSC ground on Monday (August 31). India took a giant stride towards registering its first away series win in four years, and its first series triumph on Sri Lankan soil since 1993. With a display of great character from the middle and lower orders that were determined to build on a crucial half-century from Rohit Sharma, India exorcised the ghosts of the previous evening to bat Sri Lanka out of the game. Overnight 21 for 3 when the fourth day’s play in the final Test began, India tided over a testing early period courtesy Virat Kohli and Rohit,… Read More →

India 132 ahead after eventful day of Test cricket

If you were looking for an eventful day’s Test cricket, you needn’t have looked beyond the SSC ground on a dramatic, action-packed Sunday (August 30). India and Sri Lanka played equal part in making the third day of the deciding final Test a cracker, not so much through exceptional cricket as with a slew of mistakes. The fall of 15 wickets in the 65.1 overs of play that was possible before the rain arrived in sudden and great fury to rule out any further twists in the tale might seem suggestive of a pitch from where demons reared their heads just more than occasionally. That wasn’t necessarily the case. There still was some help for the quicker bowlers, especially with… Read More →

Imperious Pujara fights Sri Lanka fire with commanding ton

29 August 2015 By R Kaushik in Colombo In searing heat and with the humidity stifling, this was a classic confrontation between fire and ice. Inevitably, given the conditions, the fire would lose its sting; also inevitably, you would think, the ice would melt at some stage. Fortunately from an Indian perspective, while the heat and the workload gradually took the sting out of from Dhammika Prasad, Cheteshwar Pujara was not to be halted at the SSC ground. Pujara, only playing the final Test because of the injuries that have laid first-choice openers M Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan low, produced the most courageous and laudable of his seven hundreds, an innings of outstanding concentration and great skill on a most… Read More →

Heavy rain curtails first day with India 50/2

It took until the tenth match day of the Test series for the Sri Lankan rain to make its first telling arrival. There is no such thing as a timely interruption, but if there was any break that was most inopportune, then it was on day one of the final Test at the SSC ground. Friday’s (August 28) opening session was unfolding beautifully. A green pitch full of live grass, heavy overhead conditions that facilitated swing, batsmen unaccustomed to such conditions. It was classic Test match cricket with only the stage subcontinental. Angelo Mathews did something that few captains in this part of the world dare to do – stick the opposition in on winning the toss. Virat Kohli said he… Read More →
