Kumar Sangakkara’s 20th One-Day International century, and seven wickets between Sachithra Senanayake and Suranga Lakmal helped Sri Lanka beat England by 90 runs in the sixth match of the seven-match series at Pallekele International Stadium on Saturday (December 13). Sangakkara’s run-a-ball 112, after being dropped by Alastair Cook on 41, in his last international match in his hometown of Kandy set up the match perfectly for a series-winning victory, and the bowlers responded with a commanding display to bowl out England for 202 in 41.3 overs. England’s chase of 292 got off to an unhappy start as Senanayake trapped Cook in front of the wicket in the third ball of the innings. Tillakaratne Dilshan then dismissed Moeen Ali for the… Read More →

England stayed alive in the seven-match One-Day International series against Sri Lanka after easing to a five-wicket victory in the fifth match at the Pallekele International Stadium on Thursday (December 11). Riding on Joe Root’s unbeaten century on the reserve day – rain made it impossible for the second innings to be played on Wednesday – England achieved the target of 240 in the final over with five balls to spare, leaving the series tantalisingly poised at 3-2. It was the highest successful chase in an ODI on the ground. On Wednesday, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 239 in 49 overs after Chris Woakes ran through the line-up to return 6 for 47. Sri Lanka’s relatively competitive total was… Read More →
Rain prevented England’s chase of 240 to win its fifth One-Day International against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Wednesday (December 10) from taking off, coming down at the end of the Sri Lankan innings and ensuring the game would spill over to Thursday, the reserve day. When play starts on Thursday, at the usual 2.30pm local time, England would get its full 50 overs – unless, of course, weather plays spoilsport again – to try and stay alive in the seven-ODI series. Earlier on Wednesday, England’s bowlers kept Sri Lanka on a tight leash. England, lagging 3-1 behind, had its bowlers – Chris Woakes in particular – giving them a fighting chance even as rain clouds hovered over the Pallekele… Read More →

ICC Media Release The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that, following remedial work and a re-test, the bowling actions of Sri Lanka’s Sachithra Senanayake and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson are legal and they can now resume bowling in international cricket. Since being reported earlier in the year, both bowlers have remodeled their bowling actions prior to applying to have their actions re-tested. The results showed that the level of elbow extension measured for all deliveries bowled was now within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC regulations. The umpires are still at liberty to report these bowlers in the future if they believe the bowler is displaying a suspect action and not reproducing the legal action that… Read More →

Earlier this week, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) banned the use of horns and hooters in venues across the country. It meant that on Sunday (December 7), the atmosphere at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo felt like old times. The Papare band, without the intrusion of modern-day noise-making devices, was in full flow. The crowd was high on music and cricket, and on the field, two home-grown old-timers, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, pushed back the clock with a fluid match-winning 96-run stand against England in the fourth One-Day International of the seven-match series. Sangakkara’s 86 took him past 1000 ODI runs for the fourth successive calendar year – he’s the third after Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli to achieve the feat… Read More →

There wasn’t an iota of doubt that England was under immense pressure coming into Wednesday’s (December 3) third One-Day International against Sri Lanka. Since reaching the final of the Champions Trophy in June 2013, the team hardly had anything in the bag as far as 50-over cricket was concerned. Defeat in the first two games of the seven-match series meant this game in Hambantota was critical in many ways. As if that wasn’t challenging enough, Sri Lanka posted a competitive 242 for 8 courtesy Kumar Sangakkara (63) and Lahiru Thirimanne (62). The hosts had opted to bat but a lengthy spell of rain very early in its innings curtailed this to a 35-overs-a-side fixture. With the series fast slipping away,… Read More →
