Herath climb to second positions in ICC Test rankings

England batsman Joe Root and Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath have moved up to take the second positions among batsmen and bowlers, respectively, in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings after their fine performances in recent matches. Root’s knocks of 124 and four in the drawn opening match of a five-Test series against India in Rajkot have seen him overtake New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen. Root, who was top-ranked in August 2015 during a home series against Australia and again two months laterduring a series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, is three points ahead of Williamson at 844 points and 42 points adrift of Australia captain Steve Smith. England qualifies for ICC Women’s World Cup 2017


England became the second team to qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 with a 122-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first match of their ICC Women’s Championship series in Colombo on Saturday. The win took next year’s ICC Women’s World Cup host to 25 points from 19 matches on the points table. Australia has already won the IWC title with 30 points from 18 matches while the West Indies is close to qualifying with 22 points from 19 matches. Rangana Herath proved why he is Sri Lanka’s MVP once again. The stand-in captain led the side to a 257-run victory against Zimbabwe in the second and final Test early on Thursday (November 10) morning in Harare, picking up the last three wickets to finish with stunning figures of 8 for 63 and overall match figures of 13 for 152, the best bowling in Zimbabwe in an innings as well as a match. Rangana Herath registered his second five-wicket haul in as many days to bowl Sri Lanka to the verge of victory in the second Test against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday (November 9). Herath followed up his five-wicket haul in the first innings with 5 for 45 in the second as Zimbabwe, which was chasing a record 491 to tie the two-Test series, went to stumps on the fourth evening on 180 for 7. Sri Lanka showed its batting might for the second day in succession, as Asela Gunaratne scored his maiden Test century and carried the team to a mammoth 504 on Day 2 of the second Test against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club on Monday (November 7). Zimbabwe, however, made a positive start when faced with a daunting total, reaching 126 for 2 in 35 overs at stumps, bringing the deficit down to 378 runs. Cremer leads resistance before Zimbabwe goes down by 225 runs


Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera took three wickets each to help Sri Lanka secure a late 225-run win against Zimbabwe in the first Test at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday (November 2).
