Pakistan’s ongoing tour of Sri Lanka has already been a memorable one. Misbah-ul-Haq’s men pulled off a stunning chase of 377 in the final Test last week to secure a 2-1 result, a first Test series win in the island nation since 2006. Building on that success, Pakistan also cruised to victory in the first game of the five-match One-Day International series in Dambulla on July 11. With Sri Lanka entering the post Mahela Jayawardene-Kumar Sangakkara era, the batting is still finding its feet, and several of the top order men got starts, but didn’t go on to make a big score. In the first ODI, Dinesh Chandimal’s enterprising half-century took Sri Lanka to a competitive 255 for 8, but… Read More →

Mohammad Hafeez turned in a fine all-round performance to power Pakistan to a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first One-Day International of a five-match series in Dambulla on Saturday (July 11). Hafeez first took 4 for 41 to restrict Sri Lanka, after Pakistan had opted to field on winning the toss, and then came out all guns blazing to smash 103 off just 95 balls to give his side a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Hafeez’s efforts meant Sri Lanka was kept to a reasonable 255 for 8 in its 50 overs. The chase, riding once again on Hafeez’s shoulders, was completed in 45.2 overs. Pakistan entered this series ranked ninth in the ICC tables, and needs… Read More →

Pakistan wrestled the momentum from Sri Lanka on a scintillating fourth day of the series-deciding third Test after centuries from Shan Masood and Younis Khan put the visiting side firmly in the driver’s seat at the Pallekele International Stadium on Monday (July 6). At stumps, Pakistan was 230 for 2, needing 147 more to secure the series currently levelled at 1-1. At one point, Pakistan was 13 for 2, but an unbroken 217-run stand between Masood and Younis for the third wicket nullified Sri Lanka’s advantage after it had set Pakistan a mammoth 377, thanks largely to Angelo Mathews’s fifth Test century in the morning session, which also saw Imran Khan bag his maiden five-for. Pakistan lost two wickets shortly… Read More →
For an hour after conceding a 63-run lead, Pakistan was in business. Sri Lanka’s top order wobbled, and the pacers had most things going their way – consistency, overhead conditions and fielders who were alert to pounce on half chances. Then came a rain break shortly before tea on day three of the final Test in Pallekele on Sunday (July 5). As the evening unfolded, it became clear that it brought about a change of luck. Edges eluded the fielders and bowlers lost zip as the home side, with the sun on its backs, raced ahead courtesy Angelo Mathews, who made a fine unbeaten 77. Sri Lanka went into stumps at 228 for 5, an overall lead of 291. Aiding… Read More →
