They will go to Headingley on Friday all square with one to play. The expected overnight declaration set the day up as one in which Sri Lanka required 390 runs and England required 10 wickets. Or, much more likely, neither requirement would be met and the docile pitch could be declared the winner. Though James Anderson beat the bat under cloudy skies during an impressive new ball spell, it was Stuart Broad who got the breakthrough, inducing Dimuth Karunaratne to pop one up to short leg where Sam Robson took a sharp… Read More →

Sri Lanka proved too strong for England in the fifth and final One-Day International at Edgbaston on Tuesday (June 3), winning by six wickets to clinch a 3-2 series victory. First paceman Lasith Malinga took 3 for 50 as Sri Lanka restricted England to 219. Media Release The International Cricket Council (ICC) has informed SLC that the umpires officiating in the 4th ODI of the ongoing England tour have reported a number of deliveries bowled by Sachithra Senanayake were considered to be suspect. Since Sachithra had over the past 2 years played many bilateral/ ICC tournaments and four earlier games in the current tour without any hint of suspicion, this comes as a surprise to SLC. As however, the ICC has a procedure in place for situations such as this, SLC has no option but to adhere to the laid down process. According to this process, Sachithra is not debarred from consideration for selection to the 5th ODI to be played at Edgbaston tomorrow.
Sri Lanka levelled the series in a Lord’s thriller in which two batsmen stood head and shoulders above their team-mates. Sri Lanka needed a magnificent century from Kumar Sangakkara, who got support from a scratchy Tillakaratne Dilshan to set a highly competitive target of 301. That looked plenty enough for the win until Jos Buttler joined Ravi Bopara in the 29th over and proceeded to hit almost every ball out of the middle, posting an extraordinary century of his own. But even that wasn’t quite enough to secure a most unexpected of wins. The winning margin of seven runs, with the result still in the balance in the 100th over of the day, was the first close result of the… Read More →
