Herath retires from T20I and ODIs – ‘I want to make room for fresh talent to be groomed’

Media Release Sri Lanka’s dependable veteran spinner Rangana Herath has announced his retirement from T20 and ODI cricket. In a letter addressed to Sri Lanka Cricket, Herath says he would like to concentrate on Test cricket – which has always been his personal passion. He went on to say “Every cricketer has to stop at the right time, I feel it’s time to make room for fresh talent to be groomed with the 2019 World Cup in view” With a career best (Tests) of 9/127 against Pakistan in 2014, 4/20 (ODI) against India in 2013 and 5/3 (T20I) against New Zealand at the WT20 in 2014, Herath has been an integral part of the Sri Lanka bowling arsenal where his brilliant… Read More →

Sensational Samuels, Brathwaite hand West Indies second title

Match Report If the West Indies had expected Joe the batsman to be the root cause of all its problems, then it wasn’t wrong. But it had surely not bargained for Root the bowler to leave his imprint. At a packed Eden Gardens on a muggy Sunday (April 3) night, Eoin Morgan, the England captain, entrusted the offspinner with new-ball responsibilities. In six previous bowls in T20I cricket, Root had done that just once, with no success. In the final of the ICC World Twenty20 2016, Root and England were in seventh heaven as Johnson Charlesand Chris Gayle both holed out in the outfield, to catches of varying degrees of difficulty completed with remarkable ease by Ben Stokes. England’s 155 for 9 after Darren Sammy won his sixth toss of the tournament had looked… Read More →

Simmons shades Kohli as West Indies reaches final

Match Report This was the big battle between the team that has perfected the art of keeping its composure under pressure, and a side rich in explosive talent, but that can blow hot and blow cold. India v West Indies, in the second semifinal of the ICC World Twenty20, was hyped up as a cracker whose destination, it was believed, would be dictated as much by which of Virat Kohli or Chris Gayle would have the better evening, as which team addressed its disciplines better. Kohli comprehensively shaded the big West Indian opener on Thursday (March 31), but India, error-prone and perhaps overcome by the occasion, still came up short as the Caribbean side found heroes of its own, most notably late replacement Lendl Simmons who… Read More →

Jason Roy leads England march to the final

Match Report If there is one thing Twenty20 cricket has taught batsmen around the world it is that no target is beyond reach. At the ICC World Twenty20 2016, New Zealand has taught the cricket world a different kind of lesson, that any score is defendable. But, a rampaging England team would not let the small matter of 154 runs stand between it and a spot in the final, and lost only three wickets in booking its flight to Kolkata and a date with the Eden Gardens. When Eoin Morgan won the toss and put New Zealand in on Wednesday (March 30) at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, he quickly discovered that this pitch was the best batting surface this ground had… Read More →

Bowlers, Amla take South Africa to consolation win

South Africa’s bowlers lifted themselves for one final push after Faf du Plessis won the toss in the final ICC World Twenty20 Super 10 Group 1 game on Monday (March 28) at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi and put Sri Lanka in. There were no devils in the pitch, but the application of the bowlers combined with the lowered intensity of the match resulted in Sri Lanka being bowled out for only 120 in 19.3 overs. Hashim Amla then led a clinical chase, South Africa winning comfortably by eight wickets. Ironically, this was the biggest turnout at the Kotla, a crowd upwards of 16,000 desperately willing AB de Villiers to give them a pyrotechnic display. As energetically as Dale Steyn… Read More →

All-round Atapattu leads Sri Lanka Women to morale-boosting win

The final Group A match of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2016 between South Africa Women and Sri Lanka Women at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Monday (March 28) may have been a dead rubber, but keeping with the trend of the tournament, it went right down to the wire as both teams fought hard. Finally, Sri Lanka kept its cool better in a battle of nerves to pull off a rather spectacular ten-run win. In a match where momentum shifts were a dime a dozen, Chamari Atapattu, the Sri Lanka captain, led her team with a fantastic all-round display under pressure. Her half-century guided the team to 114 for 7 before the spinners, Atapattu included, restricted South Africa to 104 for 7. In pursuit of… Read More →

England in Semi-Finals Despite Mathews Heroics

Four England cricketers took time off from their exciting routine of match-hotel-training-match-hotel to drive three hours out of New Delhi to spend a day being touched by magic at the Taj Mahal. Cricket’s gods smiled on Jos Buttler, David Willey, Joe Root and Liam Plunkett, each of whom played a vital role in England’s crunch game against Sri Lanka, helping it clinch a thrilling 10-run win over Sri Lanka, and a spot in the semi-finals of the ICC World Twenty20 2016. England’s win showed both South Africa and Sri Lanka the door. To score 171 after being 99 for 3 in 15 overs, to have the opposition reeling at 15 for 4 and yet allow it to within 10 runs of the target, takes… Read More →
