Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara will be playing the final Test of his career when India and Sri Lanka meet at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo for the second Test. Even before the start of the Test series when Sangakkara had announced his retirement, tributes and good wishes had started pouring to hail the Lankan legend. When India’s Test captain Virat Kohli was asked about Sangakkara’s retirement, Kohli said he would remember Sangakkara for the lovely human being that he is and the honour of playing alongside him over the years. “I am sure if a guy who is retiring from the game, I cannot connect to it but I can imagine the kind of emotions he might feel because… Read More →

Mathews climbs as India’s Dhawan makes giant stride in batting rankings; Inspired Ashwin and Sri Lanka bowlers rise There was good news for several Sri Lanka players in the latest ICC rankings which were released following its memorable 63-run victory over India in the first Test at Galle on Saturday, with career high gains for Dinesh Chandimal and Tharindu Kaushal as Rangana Herath also helped inspire the hosts to an unlikely victory. Skipper Angelo Mathews has overtaken his team-mate Kumar Sangakkara and, in the process, moved up one place to fifth inthe ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen after scores of 64 and 39. Sangakkara, who will make his final appearance for Sri Lanka in the second Test which starts in Colombo on Thursday,… Read More →
Sri Lanka unleashed its booming cannon in the shape of Rangana Herath, and the left-arm spinner shattered Indian hopes at the Galle International Cricket Stadium as the home side came from behind to win the first Test by 63 runs on Saturday (August 15). The fourth day’s play in the first Test was always going to be a test of nerves as much as it would be an examination of batsmen’s techniques against the turning ball. Sri Lanka emerged triumphant on both counts, bowling India out for 112 to cap a remarkable turnaround with a spectacular win that put the side 1-0 up in the three-Test series. Kumar Sangakkara, in his penultimate Test, led the celebratory charge, enveloping Dinesh Chandimal… Read More →
India controlled most parts of the first session, but a special counter-attacking innings from Dinesh Chandimal helped Sri Lanka stage a remarkable fight back on Day 3 of the first Test in Galle on Friday (August 14). A three-day finish had looked very much on the cards once India ended a positive fourth-wicket stand of 87 by dismissing Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews in the space of seven deliveries. At 95 for 5, Sri Lanka was still 97 shy of making India bat a second time, and Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne looked like every ball had their name written on it. Along the way, both batsmen rode plenty of luck, which they translated into aggression to take India by surprise…. Read More →
Navy Women, tournament’s only unbeaten team, deservedly won the title of Women’s D1 Limited-over tournament 2015 this afternoon when they comprehensively beat Air Force by six wickets in the finals played at Colts ground proving their supremacy in Women’s cricket. In a final that could not match the excitement after Navy bowlers led by Udeshika Prabodini bowled out Air Force, who took the first lease on winning the toss, for a paltry 86 making this final a completely one-sided affair. Sanduni Abeywickrama and Sripali Weerakkody both started well for the Airwomen, but after they got out when both were on 23, the rest of the batting had no answer to a bowling attack that took the full control of the… Read More →
Test match batting is as much about situational awareness and adaptability as it is about scoring runs. The art of scoring runs is as much about steady accumulation as about sparkling strokeplay. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli demonstrated the art of innings-building at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on a warm Thursday (August 13), driving Sri Lanka ragged with their steadfast approach. India began day two of the first Test with its noses in front, 128 for 2 in response to Sri Lanka’s 183. By the time stumps were drawn after an attritional six and a bit hours, it had moved emphatically into the driver’s seat, riding on the back of a gritty hundred by Dhawan and a masterful compilation… Read More →
Play didn’t begin until six minutes past the scheduled starting time at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday (August 12). Strong winds that savagely ruffled the white cloth serving as the sightscreen forced Sri Lanka openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva, as well as Virat Kohli and his men to wait for the ground staff to do their thing after Angelo Mathews won the toss and predictably chose to bat. That wasn’t quite the only flutter on day one of the first Test. On a lovely day for cricket with the rain staying away, R Ashwin’s 6 for 46 helped India bowl Sri Lanka out for 183, before the home side reclaimed some ground by rapidly evicting KL Rahul… Read More →
