Tharanga’s 174 seals giant win for Sri Lanka

A career-best 174 not out by Man of the Match Upul Tharanga and his record-breaking 213-run partnership with Mahela Jayawardene helped Sri Lanka beat India by 161 runs in the third match of the Celkon Mobile Tri-Nations Series Cup in Kingston on Tuesday (July 2). India, with poor displays in all departments of the game, was thoroughly outplayed and looked nothing like the No. 1-ranked side that won the Champions Trophy just nine days ago. Chasing 349 to win, India needed to fire from the word ‘go’, but lost Rohit Sharma in the fifth over to a sharp catch by Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan captain, off Nuwan Kulasekara’s bowling.  While Shikhar Dhawan hit three bright boundaries after a watchful… Read More →

Gayle ton makes it easy for West Indies

Chris Gayle stamped his muscular authority on the opening match of the Celkon Mobile Tri Nations Cup, guiding West Indies to an easy six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka after Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul took seven wickets between them to dismiss Sri Lanka for a paltry 208. Sri Lanka lost its last eight wickets for just 104 runs and there wasn’t too much drama after that as West Indies coasted to the win. It became quite apparent early on in the chase that Sri Lanka won’t be able to defend a small target when Angelo Mathews, their captain and one of the safer fielders in the side, dropped a simple chance offered by Johnson Charles off Nuwan Kulasekara. 3rd OD: West Indies A wins by 67 runs to take the series 2-1

ST. GEORGE’S , Grenada – A three-wicket new-ball burst from paceman Shannon Gabriel, and tight off-spin from Shane Shillingford , undermined Sri Lanka A and spurred West Indies A to a series winning performance in their third and final ODI at the Grenada National Stadium on Thursday. Chasing 197 for victory, after West Indies batted first and posted 196 for 8 off 50 overs, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 129 , off 40.3 overs, as Gabriel captured three for 14 and Shillingford 3 for 33. Sri Lanka struggled against tight bowling by the West Indies, who seemed geared up to defend a modest total, and were pegged back with the early dismissal of opener Niroshan Dickwella. The Sri Lankan captain… Read More →

1st OD – Sri Lanka A beat WIA by four wickets

ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada – An aggressive half century from Seekkuge Prasanna upstaged a century by opener Lendl Simmons as West Indies A lost the momentum and toppled to a four wicket defeat against Sri Lanka A in their first ODI at the national stadium here Sunday. Prasanna smashed a busy unbeaten 51 to hasten a run rate that slowed down after a number of wickets fell on the heels of a solid opening stand that gave the visitors an impressive start. Parasanna cracked a boundary to bring up his half century and  carried Sri Lanka A to 287 for six after West Indies A had posted a competitive 282 for nine in 50 overs. He faced just 17 balls, batted for… Read More →

India beats England by five runs in Champions Trophy Final

After nearly six hours spent watching dark clouds spit down on Edgbaston, a voluble India-centric crowd was treated to a frenetic 20-over final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in which the team they supported squeaked home in the tightest of twilight finishes. Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first captain to have led his team to victory in all major ICC tournaments – the 50-over World Cup, the World Twenty20 and the Champions Trophy – buttressing his credentials as a leader of men, when his side won by five runs, successfully defending 129. When the toss happened as scheduled at 10am on a windy Sunday (June 23) morning, it appeared that the weather boffins had got it wrong, and with a full 50-over game… Read More →

India marches into final after comprehensive win

(Courtesy: International Cricket Council) India’s relentless march in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013  continued as Sri Lanka was outplayed by eight wickets. This set up the India-England final at Birmingham on Sunday (June 23), the two strongest teams of the tournament making it to the business end. On a grey yet eventful day, nothing could break India’s superb rhythm – not cold winds, not Sri Lanka’s best batting or bowling, not protestors running onto the ground more than once – as it embraced unusually bowler friendly conditions to restrict Sri Lanka to only 181 for 8 and then knocked off the runs with no fuss. To be fair to Sri Lanka, this was a good toss to win, and when Mahendra Singh… Read More →

2nd T20: West Indies A strolled to a comfortable five-wicket victory

2nd T20 2

Kingstown, St Vincent – West Indies strolled to a comfortable five-wicket victory with more than eight overs to spare at an overcast Arnos Vale. Having bowled out for the Sri Lankans for a meagre score of 81 in 18.5 overs, Lendl Simmons charged West Indies to victory with cameo knocks by Smith himself and Andre Russell along the way. Though the victory left Smith please, he felt Sri Lanka didn’t play as well as they could have. He said after the game, “I really thought they would have given us a better fight but having said that our boys bowled well and we also fielded well so it was good.” Sri Lanka A’s batting fell away at regular intervals with… Read More →

1st T20: Match abandoned – Sri Lanka ‘A’ in West Indies

Sri Lanka 'A' Team for the 1st T20 against West Indies 'A'

After the 2nd ‘Test’ had been washed out at Arnos Vale, West Indies A and Sri Lanka A returned to the ground on Tuesday in hope that the first Twenty20 would come off. But things looked bleak from the morning. St Vincent awoke to heavy rainfall that lasted for much of the first half of the day. The weather eased two hours before the game, allowing the groundstaff to mop up and get the ground ready for the 2PM ECT start, but above, grey clouds and a consistent drizzle always threatened proceedings. It turned out to be the case after West Indies A won the toss and elected to field. There was enough time for journalists to pen that Sheldon… Read More →

Sri Lanka overcomes Australia to reach semifinal

_DSC0042x (1)

Sri Lanka joins England as Group A semifinalists, will face India in Cardiff This match had enough permutations and combinations to keep a mathematics student more than happy. At halfway, Australia knew that it would have to reach the target of 254 in 29.1 overs or less to qualify. For Sri Lanka, a win was enough, though restricting Australia to less than 164 would have ensured top spot in the group and an Oval semifinal against South Africa. Australia went for glory, and Sri Lanka won by 20 runs, but the margin was not enough to avoid India – newly anointed the tournament favourite – in the Cardiff semifinal on Thursday (June 20). That Australia was going to tilt at the windmill… Read More →
