Mathews had made a statement that he prefers to win the matches other than introducing young players to the team and experienced players have performed recent series well. As a captain statement is correct from his point of view. But indirectly he had stated that he is not confident on new players and introducing them will be a reason to lose matches. However these kind of statements will totally discourage new young players who is waiting for their opportunity to play in National team.
A great example we can take Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvaneswar Kumar Indian team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. Indian selectors were fully confident on them to select for such a hard knockout tournament even though they are still new to International cricket. That confidence of selectors and the captain lift the confidence of Kumar and Dhawan as well. We could see how well both of them performed in the tournament.
Sri Lanka should have a vision to win the World Cup 2015. For that mission should be to identify the best team for the CWC 2015 while winning the matches at present as well. For that SL can use this kind of tours to do experiments as much as possible by giving more opportunity for new young players. How would it be if SL could win matches with them? It will build up the confidence of them as well. If SL did not practice this now onwards, it will be difficult to stop losing another world cup final.
