To maintain consistency & to win the WC , we need young batsmen of solid technique & physically strong tall bowlers as it happens with other teams like England,India & South Africa. Batsmen of half technique ( who find it difficult to play the ball all along the ground when it is really needed) & bowlers of small & weak physique should be removed from all National sides . Considering performance & those who have maintained consistency from their young schooldays, the best squad to play in this WC is :
    1. Tharanga Paranawithana,
    2. Lahiru Thirimanne
    3. Dinesh Chandimal
    4. Angelo Mathews (Skipper)
    5. Dimuth Karunarathna

Angelo Perera is an equally good player like Dinesh Chandimal, should find a place in this squad. Only possibility is to replace him with veteran Samaraweera.

2011 world cup is very important for us as sri lankans. As it is in sub continent we have a lots of chance to win this. I think this is the best team as all of these members are at their well performance level. As asian games we shouldn’t want to just participate for that. Any how we need this world cup to our mother Sri Lanka. So guys with best performances at this stage should selected for final squad. Well balanced team with good captancy in above squad surly will bring what we need………. good luck for Sri Lankan team to bring another world cup to our motherland on2011 !

    • Surin Merinnage says:

As I mentioned the above squad i would like to adjust as the reserve player should be Thilan Samaraweera as a Batsman, because when we look at the 1996 world cup the Hashan Thilakarathne have done successfully when team in a pressure circumstance realted to falling wickets often.

But, addition to that i would like to add Ajantha Mendis as well. Becuase he has played well so far during recent Premier Limited Over Tournament Tier A. So we can utilize him as a specialised Bowler to the squad addition to Suraj Randiv. But in case, Ajantha Mendis should improve his fielding ability as well to give full strength to win matches.. Regarding the Spinners should play left and right combination of spinners to confuce the opposition batsmen.

Yes winning the world cup is important but selector should think about SLC future too.. my point is that if selector select jayasauriya ahead of a performing youngster in the domestic competition ,what will happened to his confidence ?it’ll be totally destroyed,,it’s not good for the SL cricket next generation ..i mean SL have nothing to loose if we put a performing youngster in WC.no one will blame SL selectors .so i hope that selectors will go for a youngster instead of jayasuriya .

  29. Premasiri says:

Sometimes I feel like you all are wasting your valuable time in selecting probable teams here, because the Selectors have other ideas. They don’t have any intention of winning this WC that is why they have included some players in this squad who are not good enough even for a club side with their present form. Even though the selectors try to ignore our promising youngsters, in order to provide opportunities to aging club cricketers, Bangladesh have already produced some 21 year olds who have been elected as the best Test Player(Saquib & Tamim) of the Year (2009,2010 respectivly) by The Wisden Cricketer. This is a clear indication of that we are going to get hammered by Countries like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan,…at regular basis, (the same manner that our youth teams get beaten by young Bangladeshies.) in the near future. Despite Cricket is being a major factor that strengthens our economy the selfish & timid local media always highlight news related to ignorant politicians, other bogus stars & games not suited for Asians. It is always better to give more publicity to our young promising players ( economic Assets of this poor country) like , Angelo Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, S Prasnna, Dimuth Karunarthna, Wimanga perera, Umesh Karunarathna,Malida Pushpakumara, Ramesh Abeyruwan, Marlan Madusanka, Chathuranga Kumara…..(who aren’t included here in this squad) because the responsible people are very much ignorant of talented young cricketers in this Country. It is so unfortunate that the World has not seen the Best (highly talented) Cricketers of Sri Lanka’s of last 25 years, due to the incompetency of selectors. Only very few persons do know that quality players like Anura Tennakoone ,Roy Dias, Ranjan Madugalle, Roshan Mahanama, Hashan Thilakarathne & Marvan Attapathu were forced to retire prematurely because the Selectors of last 25 years have always prefered lusty hitters whose strokes were made to travel some distance before kissing the ground, which have always made them very inconsistent performers.

WE CAN USE JAYASURIYA OR THARANGA AS THE OPENING PARTNER OF DILSHAN. IF WE USE SANA ,THERE IS A ADVANTAGE BECAUSE HE IS ALL ROUNDER.IN THE MIDDLE ORDER WE CAN SUBSTITIUTE CHAMARA SILVA FOR CHANDIMAL.IF MURALI BEING UNSUCCESFUL IN FIRST 2 OR 3 MATCHES WE CAN GIVE OPPORUNITY TO SURAJ RANDIV

If we select the most ideal team from this given squad with regard to their perfomances, that should be read as:

    1. T.M Dilshan 15. Thilina Kandamby
    2. Tharanga Paranavithana
    3. Angelo Mathews ( Skipper)
    4. Dinesh Chandimal( Wicket Keeper)
    5. Lahiru Thirimanna
    6. Thilan Samaraweera
    7. Jeewan Mendis
    8. Rangana Hearth 12. M Muralitharan
    9. Ajantha Mendis
    10. Dilhara Fernando 13. Tissara Perera
    11. Lasith Malinga 14. Thilan Thushara

We badly need a quality left-arm leg spinner in our team that is why I prefer Herath to murali. Ajantha , Malinga & Dilhara they all are capable of dislodging any top class batsman in no time. Even batsman like Tendulkar has very high regard for these 3 bowlers in particular. All these batsmen selected here are capable of playing the ball along the ground at will.

    //PLEASE IGNORE MY PREVIOUS COMMENT//
I’ve great respect for both Mahela & Sangakkara as National heroes who have brought honor and wealth into this poor country of rogues & bogus stars, although I feel, there isn’t any meaning in allocating permanent places for them in the National ODI team any longer just because they score runs heavily in home Test matches offering 101 chances in the process. They have let the Country down very badly in many ODI tournaments ever since they have joined the Team. Their ODI Batting Averages in their 1st 35 ODIs were around 20 runs per innings, that itself shows that they are not good for ODIs even though they were always asked to bat at the most important batting positions of No3 & 4. The Country need at least 3 quality batsmen to maintain consistency throughout a tournament for that team to perform well in that particular tournament. If we are to be successful in the coming WC we need batsmen the class of Tendulkar, Haseem Amla,De Viliers,Karlis,…. who are very consistent in their approach to batting. The ODI average of a player tells a volume of what kind of a player that he is. Although we had 4 quality such batsmen in Aravinda,Hashan, Mahanama & Atthapattu (Latter didn’t play a single match in his 1st & last WCs) in our 1996 WC, now we have only 2 such quality batsmen in Samaraweera & Angelo in our established National Side. They too have become useless at present, in always sending them to bat very low down in the batting order. One cannot expect any special performances from Sangakkara & Mahela in their present form because even as youth in 2003 WC they were a complete flop. Yet in the recent past we have lost almost all ODI tournaments with all these greedy veterans and other favorite players of selectors in, if we had performed well it was totally due to our bowlers and young batsmen. I would like to remind here we have lost as many as 5 home series since 2007, once to England, 3 times to India & once to Pakistan. They have always struggled do well even in Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in a triangular (involving Zimbbabwe) in 2009. Going at very important positions in the batting order they have always made things difficult for batsmen to follow in trying to survive with risky stokes. If they were selected at the cost of young promising players the both should be sent to bat very low down in the batting order. To win a Tournament involving 7 innings, the batsmen selected should be able to score over 50 runs at least 5 times out of total 7 innings if that team to win that particular tournament.
Sanath failed in all important matches in the 1996 WC. As for Kaluwitharana he could not go beyond 30 mark in any of those 6 innings though people were made to believe they were the main actors of 1996 WC. This kind of players can be any help to win a tournament is very remote. It is very sad to note that same players who were chosen for all those disastrous tournaments of recent times are included in this 30 man squad in spite of their performances even in Domestic tournaments. It is a well known fact that every year 1 or 2 academically brilliant children get into the Universities scoring highest marks. The same manner one or two extremely talented children do come out from schools each year. It is the main duty of the knowledgeable selectors to pick them young like they do in other countries, Pakistan in particular, for the last Youth WC in NewZealnd, they have a selected young kid who was only 15 years at that time who became the 1st 3 best batsmen of that tournament, a thing our selectors of last 25 could not even think of. I strongly feel young players like Khausal Silva, Lahiru Thirimanne, Sachithra Senanayake, SPrasanna, Malinda Pushpakumara, Marlan Madusanka, Dimuth Karunarathne Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Perera, Umesh Karunarathna, Bhanuka Rajapaksha Chathura Peiris should be strong contenders for the coming WC. It is always better to entertain young rather than rotten aging players and other favorites of selectors. .

Please try to comprehend what I’ve written, before commenting. We consider here only his batting. There were far better left arm leg spinners & fielders who could not play a single match for the country because of this kind of greedy cricketers ( Whose success rate in his entire career has been 1 out of 5 innings played, at present Sanath’s success rate is nil) & incompetent selectors of last 15 years.
