MAJOR LEAGUE SUPER 8 TOURNAMENT:

Chilaw Marians CC, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, BRC and NCC won their matches in the final round of Major League Super 8 Tournament played last week.

At the CCC grounds, Chilaw Marians CC registered a massive 264-run win over SSC.  Put into bat, Chilaw Marians set about in typical rollercoaster fashion with both openers Shehan Jayasuriya and Ashen Silva hammering centuries. The duo shared in a record 245-run alliance with Jayasuriya striking 146 off 159 balls inclusive of 19 boundaries and Silva 105 off 227 balls containing 15 boundaries in a total of 372. SSC was bowled out for 232 with Jayasuriya capping a superb all-round performance claiming 4 wickets for 48 and going on to once again be joint top scorer with 88 along with R. Upamal in a second innings total of 399. Chasing 540 for victory SSC could muster only 275 with Jayasuriya picking another 4 scalps for 65 for a match bag of 8 for 113.

Meanwhile, BRC defeated Ragama CC by 8 wickets at the FTZ grounds, Katunayake. Batting first, Ragama were bundled out for 129 with H.H. Ramanayake claiming 5 for 29 and Suraj Randiv 2 for 27. BRC replied with 149 and dismissed Ragama for 138 in the second essay with Randiv picking 5 for just 8 runs. BRC polished off the 119-run victory target for the loss of 2 wickets with T.N. Sampath unbeaten on 50 and M.L.R. Buddika on 34.

At the Galle International Stadium, NCC trounced Colts CC by an innings and 143 runs. Batting first, Colts were shot out for 127 with L. Ambuldeniya taking 5 for 33 and C.B.R.L.S. Kumara 4 for 26. NCC responded with a mammoth 618 for 9 declared with four century acts by openers L.U. Igalagamage 157 (229b, 18×4, 3×6), Banuka Rajapaksa 134 (170b, 15×4, 2×6), Angelo Perera an unbeaten129 (134b, 14×4), and Mahela Udawatte 106 (120b, 14×4, 1×6).

Colts made 348 in the second innings with Sahan Arachchige scoring 116 off 234 balls studded with 13 boundaries, and P.A.R.P. Perera 70. S.N. Peiris took 5 for 68.

At the SSC grounds, Sri Lanka Ports Authority rallied after conceding a first innings lead of 91 for a 6 wicket win over Saracens SC. Batting first, Saracens totalled 311 on a top score of 87 by K.N.A. Bandara and 56 by M. Jaleel. W.M.C. Jayampathi took 3 for 43 and N.C. Komasaru 3 for 96.

Ports Authority made 220 with English player N.R.D. Compton top scoring with 103 off 140 balls studded with 10 boundaries and a six. Saracens were bundled out for 118 in the second turn with W.M.C. Jayampathi taking 5 for 33 and Komasaru 3 for 34.

Ports Authority made no mistake in the run chase of 210 closing on 213 for 4 with Compton again the mainstay with 95 off 116 with 13 boundaries and a six missing out on twin centuries by a whisker.
