Day 2 Bulletin – 2nd Test

First session day 2 India at Green Park Stadium

India pile on 535 for 4 at lunch with both overnight batsman back in the hut

Resuming on a very strong footing, Dravid and Tendulkhar, were expected to push the score along from 417 for 2 wickets, which incidentally is India’s highest Ever score on day one of a test match.

Dravid batting on 85 overnight played some depth nudges used his feat well this morning against pace and spin to reach his 28thcentury, following Gautham Gambir ‘s footsteps by scoring  back to back centuries in this series .Dravid looked well in command by covering the line of Ajantha Mendis’s  variation while punishing anything  loose to great effect.

Surprisingly Tendulkhar looked very sedate in his approach. Dilshan also sprung another surprise when he dropped the master crafter at mid wicket on 37. With India advancing from their overnight score of 417 to 464, the 3rd wicket Partnership of 94 came to an end when Tendulkhar was caught at mid on by Thilan Samaraweera for 40 thus giving  Ajantah Mendis his first wicket.

Dravid’s dismissal was very unfortunate. It was VVS Laxman who should have been out when a caught and ball chance off the bat of Laxman was spilt by Rangana Herath and the ball luckily for Sri Lanka ended up ricocheting the stumps at the non striker’s end. Sad  that  Dravid  had to pay the penalty for Laxman’s sin, when he was trapped outside the popping crease to be ruled run out  for 144 , ending a long vigil which Included 15 fours and a six, with India’s on total on 511.

India took lunch on 535 for 4 wickets with VVS Laxman on 24 and Yuvraj Singh on 13.The wicket is taking turn hence Sri Lanka will have to bat their hearts out on this pitch.

Second session India lose 3 Wickets.

The Indian batsman both VVS Laxman unbeaten on 24 and Yuvraj Sing batting on 13, Opened their shoulders after the lunch break as Sri Lanka started leaking runs to all parts of the park.

The right hand left hand combination looked very effective as both players who are renowned to be good players of spin quickly got their act together. The Indian score reached  613 for 4 wickets, with the 650  in the horizon. Both Muralitheran and Mendis were victims yet again to another Indian onslaught.

VVS who was lucky to survive a lbw decision off a Rangana Herath  Wrong un, where  replays  clearly showed  the right hander plum in front. However  VVS lost his patience to give Dilshan an easy catch at Mid off to the bowling of Herath for 63 with India’s score on 613. Indian captain MS Dhoni trying to force the pace was bowled by Herath for 4 with India on 619. Harbajan Singh then joined his senior partner Yuvraj Singh who was batting on 66.  Harbajan known for his big hitting fell victim to a super chinaman from Rangana Herath to be bowled for 5 and India took tea on 639 for 7 wickets with Yuvraj unbeaten on 66.

By far this was the best session for Sri Lanka during this test So far. Rangana Herath with 3 wickets in this session seemed to grow in confidence with the ball gripping and spinning.

Third and final session India lose their tail Enders for 3 runs while Dilshan out in the first ball

India lost an early wicket that of Yuvraj Singh soon after the tea break. The left hander batting on 67, was brilliantly caught by Kumar Sangagkara off Ajantha Mendis to give the right arm off spinner his second scalp. The rest of the Indian batsman namely Zaheer Khan and S.Sreesanth were out cheaply to give Rangana Herath a five wicket haul. The Indian’s were bowled out for 642 runs when in fact they looked good to score well over 700 runs. Indian batsman were positive in their approach, they made merry on good batting conditions with Shewag, Gambir and Dravid stroking fluent centuries while VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Sing contributing 63 and 67.

Sri Lanka first target is to get to 442 runs and avoid the follow on.prolific run scorer Dilshan was dismissed in the very first ball when he played a casual stroke to a ball going down the leg side, only succeeding in top edging to Prageet Ojah  at backward of point for no score. The Indian captain introduced Harbajan Sing very early in the day with the ball gripping and turning square. Harbajan as anticipated looked threatening with his high arm action. Run making off Bhaji as he’s fondly known looks awesome. Over the years he has improved to be a bowler who gets his captain wickets at regular intervals. Sangagkara and Paranavithana were made to sweat and go through some anxious moments with the Indian right arm left arm spin combination of Harbajan and Prageeth Ojah hunting in pairs. Credit must go to the Sri Lankan pair of Kumar Sangagkara and Tharanga Paranavithana who withered the Indian storm. The last ten over’s looked like the final session of a typical Indian pitch  on day 5 with 5 fielders breathing round the bat as Sri Lanka end the day on 66 for 1 wicket with Sangagkara and Paranavitha not out on similar scores of 30.
