Fernando & Pradeep see Lankans tame Lions

Dilhara Fernando took three wickets for four runs as Sri Lanka completed their preparations for next week’s first Test against England with a morale-boosting 38-run win over the England Lions on Sunday.

Sri Lanka, who’d already beaten Middlesex, won on the fourth and final day after being made to follow-on.

England Test call-up Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara, left out of the 12-man squad named earlier Sunday for the first of a three-Test series starting in Cardiff on Thursday, both fell victim to paceman Fernando, who finished with figures of three for 33.

Nuwan Pradeep took four for 29 as Sri Lanka bowled out the Lions for 183 in the hosts’ second innings.

Earlier the Lions dismissed Sri Lanka for 448, featuring hundreds from captain Tillakaratne Dilshan and Tharanga Paranavitana, with Surrey’s South Africa-born Jade Dernback taking a career-best nine wickets in the match.

That left the Lions needing 222 in 73 overs for victory.

But the target proved beyond them with Morgan, whose 193 in the first innings cemented his Test place, falling for just four second time around when he was caught low down at second slip.

Sangakkara, Mahela, Thilan & Dilshan , are getting close to their retiring age. If they were in any other country such as Eng,Aus,SA or India for that matter would have been asked to get ready for retirement. Our Country’s Cricket administration of last 2 decades has been as such the senior players always take the upper hand. The seniors should be asked to bat low down and get ready for retirement soon without being burdens to the Team as in the case of Jayasuriya. They may like to stay forever as luxuries do come their way in the form of IPL Contracts, but The continuity of Country’s Cricket is more important than interests of few greedy individuals. The responsible persons at SLC should educate the politicians (who are ignorant on affairs related to Cricket), on these matters pls.
The powerless Administrators do have to concentrate more on our future stars soon rather than later & provide opportunities to our young promising players, the likes of AngeloM, KausalS, LahiruT, DimuthK,RoshenS, AngeloP,Bhanuka,.. Not only that they should be sent to bat at right positions. After all they are far better players than 22 year old Sangakkara & Mahela. The sending of the most promising batsman (1st Class Bat Ave 63+) to bat very low down in the batting order in the just concluded match is a gross error made by the team management because his lightning reflexes are far better than any in this team.
The batting position does affect the performance of quality batsmen, e.g. Dilshan was a complete failure as a middle order Bat, and interestingly he was dropped for the tour of Bangladesh in 2009. He had done well since, as an opener in the following Domestic Tournaments, forced the Selectors to bring him back into the team as an opener.
Incidentally Randiv (1stCl.Bow.Ave25.03)& Herath( 1stCl.Bow.Ave24.81) aren’t the best spinners in the Country to replace Murali. There are a dozen of better spinners who have lot of variety in their bowling & better 1st Class Averages. to name a few Sachithra Senanayake (1stCl.Bow.Ave20.15) 282, 1st Cl Wickets.;SPrasanna(1stCl.Bow.Ave19.56) 277, 1st Cl Wickets.;Pushpakumara Malinda (1stCl.Bow.Ave18.96) 160, 1st Cl Wickets.; Mendis BM Kalhara D (1stCl.Bow.Ave 17.18) 87, 1st Cl Wickets.. Kalhara Mendis is a very successful Right Arm Leg Spinner in the same vein as his brother Jeewan. A player like him is badly needed for the 1st XI Side (pls note: all these Stats. courtsey EspnCricInfo.com
