Galle and Colombo Joint Champs in rain hit final

Thirimanne 115, Hasaranga de Silva 87 in Galle’337/7

Lahiru Thirimanne reeled off a brilliant century 115 off 128 balls in what was literally the innings of his life while Hasaranga de Silva struck a whirlwind 87 off 53 in Galle’s mammoth total of 337 for 7 against Colombo in the rain marred final of the Sri Lanka Cricket Super Provincial Tournament 2019 that ended in a no result at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Thursday. Both sides were accordingly declared joint champions and shared an equal quantum of the prize money.

The day particularly belonged to the left handed Thirimanne for his stroke filled defining century in staking a strong claim for a berth in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad in the wake of his 82 against Dambulla. He hit 9 boundaries and a six bringing up his 100 off 102 balls containing 8 hits to the ropes while Hasaranga de Silva struck 13 boundaries and a six in displaying his prowess as a worthy middle order batsman. His 50 came off 33 balls inclusive of 7 boundaries. The pair put on 144 for the fifth wicket off 16.3 overs with de Silva departing with the total on 273. Thirimanne’s marathon knock upfront ended with the total on 296 in the fifth delivery of the 45th over. Suranga Lakmal, Asitha Fernando, Shehan Jayasuriya, Seekuge Prasanna and Chamika Karunaratne claimed a wicket each. The match was called off due to bad weather at 3.30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Galle’s Dananjaya de Silva was adjudged Player of the Tournament and Galle skipper Lasith Malinga the Best Bowler of theTournament while Dambulla skipper Angelo Mathews was adjudged the Best Batsman of the Tournament.
