Galle are Super Provincial Champs; Roshen Silva (168 & 89), Kandy’s 19-year old Pathum Nissanka (188) super stuff

Galle emerged the top rung team yesterday taking the cake as Super Provincial champions in the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) conducted tournament that pitted the cream of talent that was divided into four super teams concluded yesterday.

Galle drew with Kandy in the final round while Dambulla beat Colombo by 5 wickets.

Galle’s Roshen Silva was in top gear making 168 off 112-balls and 89 against Kandy at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium. Kandy too had a champion in 19-year old Isipathana schoolboy prodigy Pathum Nissanka who was equal to the task hogging the spotlight on the final day scoring 188 off 226 balls. It was a classic knock that underscored schoolboy talent in top flight domestic cricket. It was studded with 20 boundaries and 3 sixes. Galle, batting first totaled 425 and 306 for 9 declared with Upul Tharanga scoring 103 off 111 balls containing 14 boundaries and 2 sixes. Roshen Silva capped his overall performance as the highest run getter in the tournament aggregating 535 from five innings. The top wicket taker in the final round was Nishan Peiris who claimed 6 for 67.

Meanwhile, Dambulla completely outplayed Colombo in finishing it off by 5 wickets at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium having bowled out the opposition for 210 in the first innings and replied with an imposing 359 with D.M. Sarathchandra striking 103 off 181 balls packed with 11 boundaries. Kusal Janith Perera made 85 off 91 with 11 boundaries and a six. Colombo did put up a better display in the second innings totaling 351 with Shahan Jayasuriya top scoring with a run a ball 77 hitting 11 boundaries and a six while Lahiru Thirimanne made 52 off 87 with 5 boundaries and skipper Dinesh Chandimal 44 off 51 with 6 boundaries. The bowling honours went to Dambulla’s L.D. Madushanka who picked 5 for 43 in the first innings and Chamila Karunaratne 5 for 63 in the second innings.

Dambulla made light of the 203-run victory target with Kusal Mendis making 62 off 117 balls packed with 7 boundaries and Sachithra Serasinghe 55 off 78 with 7 hits to the ropes.
