Galle romped to their second successive win beating Dambulla by 76 runs in the third match of the Sri Lanka Cricket 50-Over Super Provincial Tournament played at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Saturday.
In a tournament considered the prelude to selections for the upcoming 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Galle continued the impregnable dominance from the routing of Kandy last Thursday with the top order batsmen flogging the Dambulla bowlers in amassing 345 for 8 wickets in 50 overs. Leading the run charge upfront was Lahiru Thirimanne opening the batting striking a composed 82 off 96 balls studded with 6 boundaries and a six. Thirimanne shared in a 65-run alliance for the first wicket with Sadun Weerakkody who stroked a run a ball 41 inclusive of 8 boundaries. Thereafter Dhananjaya de Silva chipped in with a quick fire top score of 89 off 76 balls packed with 11 hits to the ropes sharing in a 151-run alliance for the second wicket with Thirimanne. Thirimanne was fourth out with the total on 234 in the second ball of the 36th over from which point Milinda Siriwardana slammed 65 off just 44 balls sharing in an 89-run alliance for the sixth wicket with Minod Bhanuka who made 44 off 36 with 3 boundaries. Hadigallage Ishan Jayaratne was the pick of the Dambulla bowlers with 3 for 43 while Isuru Udana took 2 for 64.
Dambulla chasing a mammoth target of 346 for victory were in deep trouble at 4 for 87 in 19.2 overs before veteran batsman Angelo Mathews rose to the occasion with a polished 78 off 84 balls inclusive of 7 boundaries and a six in displaying the type of form with the world cup round the corner. However, while the former Sri Lanka captain enhanced his prospects of world cup selection with his individual brilliance Dambulla found the target too much to overhaul following the early setback. The disparity was reflected by the next best contributions being 23 by Jeevan Mendis and 20 byFernando 20, Dhananjaya de Silva was the pick of the Galle bowlers with 3 for 57 from his wily spin to round off a fine all-round performance while former veteran paceman Dhammika Prasad chipped in with an impressive 2 for 16 in 5 overs. The slinger and skipper of Galle Lasith Malinga had 1 for 32 in a composed 8 overs in the wake of his match winning haul of 7 for 49 against Kandy.
