India Women took an unassailable 2-0 lead after their comprehensive six wickets win over Sri Lanka Women in the second ODI at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi. India had won the first ODI by 89 runs, and like in the first game, they dominated in all departments of the game.
Needing a moderate 189, the home team got to the mark with 42 balls to spare. Opener Smriti Mandhana missed out on her fourth consecutive half-century by just four runs. She struck four boundaries and one six before getting out on 46 off as many balls. Captain Mithali Raj remained unbeaten on 53 and stitched a 64-run stand for the third wicket with Harmanpreet Kaur (41). India lost four wickets and all four Indian batters fell to the left-arm spin of Sugandika Kumari (4/39).
Earlier, a disciplined bowling effort saw the home team restrict Sri Lanka to just 188/9. Deepti Sharma registered her career best figures (4/29) as Sri Lanka once again struggled to score freely. The visitors began confidently with the opening pair scoring at almost run-a-ball when first-change Deepti got through the defence of Chamari Athapaththu in the sixth over. The wicket brought about a change as India tightened things up. Struggling to score, the visitors got to the 50-mark only in the 20th over. Deepti then struck again as Lankan opener Prasadani Weerakkodi was trapped in front for 37.
India were then able to break partnerships at regular intervals as the visitors lost the plot. In danger to be bowled out well inside the 50 overs like in the previous game, a 49-run stand for the seventh wicket kept Sri Lanka afloat. Senior player Dilani Manodara brought her experience to the fore and remained unbeaten on 43.
The third and final ODI will be played on Friday.
