Indian Companies back Wayamba

The Sri Lankan provincial champions, Wayamba Elevens are set to take the Champions League T20 by storm with a strong backing from Indian Companies as their sponsors. The star studded team which include the likes of Mahela Jayawardene, Ajantha Mendis , Farveez Maharoof and Captain Jehan Mubarak are set to open their Champions League innings on Sept 11th 2010.

Despite three Indian teams participating in the tourney, there is no shortage of Indian sponsors backing the provincial champions. Strategic intent and a growing Sri Lankan economy are posing attractive growth opportunities for Indian companies to foray into the Sri Lankan market. Rightly so, companies have chosen cricket as a marketing platform to tap the island nation.

Companies in the fray namely Kunnath Pharmaceuticals, Karbonn Mobiles and the apparel partner-Skechers (Future Brands) will be associated with Wayamba Elevens at the Champions League T 20 in South Africa starting September 10th. The growing popularity of Sri Lankan players with their participation in the IPL coupled with frequent bi-lateral ties between India & Sri Lanka also serves an attractive proposition for these companies to associate with Sri Lankan Cricket.

Kunnath Pharmaceuticals who is engaged in the research, development and manufacture of high quality ayurvedic medicines and food supplements will be the lead partner of Wayamba Elevens at the 2010 Champions League. Managing Director of Kunnath Pharmaceuticals, Dr KC Abraham feels that the current association with the Champions League T20 is the most exciting. “There is always a strategic intent behind all our sports sponsorship associations and we continue with the same intent in our association with Wayamba Elevens. The export market is strategic as ours is an Ayurvedic drug and Ayurveda is relished in other parts of the world. Also, we are India’s fastest growing herbal brand and our endeavor is to become a globally renowned brand and this vision of ours complements Wayamba Elevens who are also aiming to be the number one T20 team in the world” said Dr. KC Abraham.

The associate sponsor of the team, Karbonn Mobiles who was present in the first edition of the Champions League continues to adopt a team sponsorship strategy.

Sudhir Hasija, Chairman-Karbonn Mobiles added “Karbonn has had a significant association with cricket over the years and we are delighted to take forward our association with the Wayamba Elevens into its 2nd year after a successful first year in the inaugural edition of the Champions League. We would like to wish them the very best of luck for this years edition.”

Skechers, the apparel partner of Wayamba Eleven wishes the team the very best for Champions League T20. Skechers is sure of this association bringing the brand closer to cricket fans all over the world.

Sandeep M. Bhammer, Chairman – Somerset Entertainment Ventures said “We are thrilled that Indian Corporates have stood up and taken notice of the quality of the Wayamba Elevens team. With a number of excellent teams participating in the Tournament, and of course, each team being a winner or a runner up in its respective country’s domestic T20 tournament, potential sponsors had a wide variety of quality units to choose from for the purposes of sponsorship. However, it could not be more fitting that well respected Indian companies from high growth sectors within India such as pharmaceuticals, telecom and financial services would sponsor the Wayamba Elevens team, thereby expressing confidence in not only the Wayamba Elevens team’s potential to grow and progress within the Tournament, but also the potential of Sri Lanka, as a nation, to grow.”

The partnership deals with Wayamba Elevens was made possible by Total Sports Asia, Asia’s leading sports marketing agency, Total Sports Asia recently teamed with rights holders, Somerset Entertainment Ventures, a Singapore based cricket marketing company to roll out the Sri Lanka Premier League.
