Jeewantha Kulathunga played an outstanding innings to score 132 runs in 97 balls to help his province wayamba, compile a winning total of 289 runs in their allotted 50 overs against an inexperienced SLC Combined eleven, comprising of under 19 stars and young hopefuls from the under 23s.
The Bank of Ceylon inter provincial limited over encounter was played at Jeewantha Kulathungas’ home ground at Colts CC ,where the right hander excelled in executing eleven boundaries and four massive sixes. None of the other Wayamba batsmen were impressive against an attack that lacked penetration. Mahela Udawatte batted cautiously for his 27 while Michael Vandort scored an attractive 30, but played an erratic stroke to be dismissed.
Mahela Jayawardena will be disappointed that he could not get among the runs. Credit to the young SLC combined eleven; they bowled reasonably well, by keeping a close check on the rest of the strong Wayamba batting line up, however the youngsters were guilty of bowling 11 wides. They also made a tactical error in bowling Liyanapathiranage the young off spinner, in the final over of the innings. Liyanapathiranage was hit for 22 runs by tail ender Isurau Udana.
A target of 290 runs was never going to be easy for the SLC combined XI. Welegedera stuck early when he dismissed Rumesh Buddika for a golden duck, in the very first over. He came back strongly yet again and had Banuka Rajapaksa caught by wicket keeper Sameera De Zoysa for 7 in his second over. Andri Berenger who made a brisk 20 was Welegederas’ third victim, he was caught brilliantly at backward of point by centurion Jeewantha Kulatunga with SLC combined total on 42.
Skipper Hans Fernando looked impressive with the bat. The right hander made a polished 33 before being trapped LBW to Ajantha Mendis. Many expected an early end to this game when the youngsters slumped to 94 for 6 wickets with all the top order batsmen back in the pavilion.
Under 19s skipper Chathura Peiris and Demintha Dahanayake came up with a good partnership of 108 runs for the 7th wicket. Chathura Peiris proved that he is no mug with the bat when he stroked a fluent 60 off 69 balls with six boundaries and one big six, while his partner middle the ball and played with authority for a well compiled 50.
Ajantha Mendis bowled well yesterday. The right arm off spinner with his wide range of variety concede only 28 runs in his ten over spell, and scalped three wickets in the process. Chanaka Welegedera who bowled only his initial spell of 5 overs did not complete his overs due to an injury.
Wayamba lost to Basnahira South by 18 runs, in their last outing .This win by against an SLC combined X1 will do them a world of good as they prepare for their 3rd game in this year’s Bank of Ceylon inter provincial tournament against Ruhuna at Kurunegala this Friday.
