MAJOR LEAGUE TIER A TOURNEY: Chilaw Marians, Tamil Union, Army achieve outright wins

Chilaw Marians, Tamil Union and Army achieved outright wins in last week-end’s Major League Tournament Tier A matches.

Chilaw Marians romped to its second successive triumph in two weeks with a resounding 320-run win over Badureliya CC while Tamil Union beat Ports Authority by 120 runs and Army won over NCC by 6 wickets.

At the FTZ Complex, Katunayake Chilaw Marians continued their winning streak in Group B notching 371 in the first innings propelled by S.A. Serasinghe who struck 103 and D.H.A.P. Tharanga 70 and I. Udana 41.  Chilaw Marians then made light of the Badureliya batting that folded up for 162 with off spinner Malinda Pushpakumara claiming 5 wickets for 40. It enabled Chilaw Marians to make a timely declaration on 267 for 3 wickets with B.O.P. Fernando scoring 103, K.V.A. Adikari 78 and S.C. Serasinghe 51. Pushpakumara was quick to follow up with another 3 for 55 for a match haul of 8 wickets for 95 as Badureliya caved in for 156 chasing an improbable victory target of 476.  A.M. Fernando and S.C. Serasinghe also chipped in with 3 for 22 and 3 for 49 respectively.

At the P. Saravanamuthuthu Stadium, Tamil Union came from behind of having trailed Ports Authority by 113 runs to pull off a remarkable 126-run victory in a Group B match. Taking first lease Tamil Union was shot out for 120 with Akalanka Ganegama claiming 5 for 35.

Ports Authority, fresh from an innings triumph over Badureliya the previous week, replied with 233 on J.M.G.M. Rupasinghe’s 89, N.R.D. Compton 56 against some tight bowling by D. Wickramanayake who claimed 6 for 42. But Tamil Union made a remarkable comeback posting 384 for 6 declared piloted by D. M. Sarathchandra’s 102. Other chief contributions were by N.T. Paranavithana 78, B.M.A.J. Mendis 72 and R.A.B. Rambukwella 41. From there Ports Authority lost the initiative in the face of a 271-run victory target being bowled out for 145. D. Wickramanayake and B.M.A.J. Mendis claimed 4 wickets apiece for 22 and 38 respectively.

At Panagoda, Army’s 6 wicket triumph over NCC in a Group B match was triggered by NCC conceding a 145 first innings lead. Batting first, NCC was all out for 224 to which Army responded with a huge 369 led by D.D. de Soysa’s unbeaten 97. S. Perera made 79 and A.V.L. Madushan 71 with L. Ambuldeniya claiming 3 for 105. In the second essay NCC could muster only 235 leaving Army a modest 90 to win which was achieved on an unbeaten 50 by J.S. Perera.
