Under-19: Mendis leads Sri Lanka’s victory

Sri Lanka got the better of New Zealand by a solid 49-run margin in a Group D game, played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday (February 14).

Batting first, Sri Lanka U19 managed to score 275 for 9 in its 50 overs, mainly due to a 107-ball 91 from its captain Kusal Mendis. Losing wickets at regular intervals, New Zealand U19 fell short by 49 runs, finishing at 226 for 8.

Sadeera Samarawickrama (67) and Mendis, shared a 97-run stand for the second wicket to set Sri Lanka up for a big total. Contributions and partnerships from the middle order, Priyamal Perera (37) and Thilaksha Sumanasiri (22) ensured the team was on course to post a competitive total.

Kyle Jamieson, who dismissed opener Hashan Dumindu, came in to clean up the lower order, picking up four wickets for 49, but not before Sri Lanka had enough runs to defend.

The New Zealand openers, Tim Seifert and Raki Weerasundara put on 63 runs before both were dismissed in the span of three overs. Seifert was stumped off Lakshan Jayasinghe for 29, while Weerasundara (33) edged one to the keeper off Anuk Fernando.

Captain, Robert O”Donnell offered some resistance in the middle, sharing partnerships with Ken McClure and Shawn Hicks and Luke Williamson, but none of them were enough to see it through.

Kyle Jamieson, backed his four-wicket haul with an unbeaten 29, but New Zealand eventually fell short. Binura Fernando, Anuk and Lakshan finished with two wickets apiece.

New Zealand will play its next game against UAE on Sunday, while Sri Lanka takes on England on the same day.
