Our strategy worked – Rajapaksa

Sri Lanka ‘A’ No.4 bat Bhanuka Rajapaksa, former Royal College left-hander who played a match-winning knock of 72 in 73 balls, coming in to bat when his team was in trouble losing two quick wickets for 22 when chasing 259 to win a must-win game yesterday, said his team’s ploy to attack the England ‘A’ left-arm spinners worked handily paving the way for them to win the match by six wickets in the 3rd one-dayer of the two teams at Kurunegala.

“After we lost the first two games, our coach (Romesh) Kaluwitharana asked us to attack the England left-arm spinners who dominated us earlier. I think the strategy worked really well.

I was advised to hit hard at the loose balls. I did so though we were in a spot of bother (2 down for 22) when I went to the middle. But the wicket was really good for batting.

Before the match, our plan was to restrict them below 275 because we knew we could chase such a target on this wicket.

I hope to do my best if I’m called for the National side (now in Australia for a triangular ODI series). There are pretty good batsmen in the National side now but by being able to mix with them for top international matches I will gain vital experience.”

Both Dimuth & Bhanuka are 2 extremely talented players that had always been among the best 10 Schoolboy Cricketers of the year since their very young age as 15 & the two with 1st Class Batting Aves. around 45, performing this manner can be always expected however, we can’t expect the same, from some favorites of selectors who have found places in the team for no valid reason, If the selectors had employed few of truly promising batters the likes of Angelo Perera, Kaushal Silva, Roshen Silva, Ashen Silva, Sachithra Serasinghe, Rumesh Buddika, Udara Jayasundera, Umesde Karunaratne who maintains 1st Cla Bat. Aves. 45+,49+,48+,45.+,40.+,38.+,39.+respectively( at present), we could have easily won the previous 2 matches as well. As for bowlers they should have selected extremely talented bowlers the likes of Malinda Pushpakumara, Dulanjana Mendis, Umesh Karunarathna, Charith Jayampathi and Rohan Jayatissa who’ve been very consistent performers in the domestic scene & maintain 1st Cla Bat. Aves. 19+, 17+,28+,16+& 14+ respectively.

The picking of Warnapura, Bandara, and Khandamby Thusara who are too old compared to their counterparts & Udawatte, Janith, Gunathilake, Kosala whose 1st Cla Bat. Aves. are 31+,28+,26+. 25+ respectively expose the ignorance of selectors with regard to the matters related to pick talented young. They have always preferred risky stroke-makers as front-line batters who try to survive with edgy & lofted strokes who don’t have proper technique to play the ball all along the ground and this very reason has made us a very inconsistent team for the last 25 years. These jokers have always had a disliking for technically sound (those who have total control over strokes they execute) batters the likes of Attapattu, Samaraweera who can play a lengthy innings with minimum of risks. This poor thinking of selectors have created a wrong impression among International Cricket Community about the talent we have in this Country. The Game of Cricket at National Level is not a place to entertain henchmen.
