Gold medal favorites Pakistan proved to be the superior team when they out played Sri Lanka to win the T20 SAG game by 6 wickets at the Sher-e- Bangla National cricket stadium yesterday.
Electing to bat first Sri Lanka lost both openers Dilshan Munaweera and Dinesh Chandimal cheaply. Dilshan was bowled in the first over by seam bowler Mohamed Rameez for no score. Dinesh Chandimal was run out for 4. The early dismissals put Sri Lanka on the back foot and they never recovered.
Skipper Ashan Priyanjana and Lahiru Thirimana consolidated the innings after the early loss; however both players failed to capitalize.
Pakistan bowled well and their ground fielding and catching was excellent. Sri Lanka will be disappointed to be bowled out for 99 in 18.3 overs. Pakistan had no difficulty in reaching the target in 18.2 overs for the loss of only 4 wickets.
Ali Asad and Adil Amin put on a match winning partnership of 47 runs for the 3rd wicket. None of the Sri Lankan bowlers were impressive, and the seam attack was not penetrative.
Sri Lanka will play Maldives today while Pakistan will compete against home team Bangladesh. Bangladesh still has a chance of qualifying for the finals if they beat Pakistan by a good run rate.
Sri Lanka will need a big win against the Maldives, and will have to depend on the outcome of the Pakistan Bangladesh encounter if they are to qualify for the finals.
