Rain robbed Sri Lanka of the opportunity of beating the West Indies in the second test match at St. Lucia with 32.3 overs lost on the final day as a result. Sri Lanka, who were dismissed for 342 shortly after resumption, had the West Indies on a wobble at 147 for 5 chasing a daunting 296 runs for victory. Twenty five year old debutant Kasun Rajitha with his right arm medium pace gave his side the ideal start dismissing opening batsman Devon Smith for 1 and No.3 batsman Kiran Powell for 2 in two overs as the host team slumped to 2 for 8 within 3.4 overs. Then Suranga Lakmal removed R.L. Chase clean bowling him for 13 making it 3 for 55 and and when off spinner Akila Dananjaya got rid of Dowich for 8 West Indies were tottering on 64 for 4 wickets after 27,2 overs.
The Lankans found a thorn in Kraigg Brathwaite who held one end up as the West Indies took the total to 117 before a breakthrough came before the wicket of Shai.Hope claimed by Suranga Lakmal who castled his stumps. Hope made 39 off 119 balls. With his dismissal skipper Dinesh Chandimal and his charges moved in for the kill with another 25 overs before them to wrap it up. But it was to their despair when the rains came down with the inclement weather spoiling Sri Lanka’s chances when play was called off with the West Indies on 147 for 5 in 60.3 overs.
Sri Lanka 253 (Chandimal n.o. 119, Mendis 45, Gabriel 5-59, Roach 4-49) and 342 (Mendis 87, Dickwella 62, Gabriel 8-62)
West Indies 300 (Smith 61, Kumara 4-86) and 147 for 5 (Brathwaite n.o.59, Hope 39, Rajitha 2-23, Lakmal 2-48)
