Today in Dambulla Pakistan under 19 skipper Azeem Ghumman won the toss against hosts Sri Lanka under 19s,and took lease of the perfect batting strip.
The Pakistani batsman was at their best today. The Sri Lankan bowling in both pace and spin was far below par. The order of the day for Sri Lankan bowlers was much to be desired. They bowled short gave their counterparts plenty of loose deliveries to make merry on a placid pitch.
Babar Azam made a brilliant 127 in 142 deliveries with 14 fours. The young opener was ably supported by Shazaib Ahmed who made a patient 50. Muzamil Nizam batted skill fully by taking the singles, making the two’s into threes and ended up scoring 39 runs in 38 balls by executing only one boundary.
Sri Lanka youth must pull their socks up with their ground fielding. Upul chandana the fielding coach has a lot of work in this area. The only Sri Lankan bowler who impressed was jayampathi who took 2 wickets for 37 in his ten over spell.
In pursuit of 268 for victory Sri Lanka lost five top order batsmen for an appalling 67 runs. Pace man Sarmad Bhatti was exceptional in his seven over spell. The youngster captured 3 wickets for 31 runs, exhibiting a fine art on controlling the new ball.
Sri Lanka was saved by the bell when Mother Nature opened up at 4.45 pm with only 15.5 overs being bowled by the visitors. The home team should thank heavens for saving them from an embarrassing defeat.
Both Teams will share 2 points each in the 3 nation tournament, since a minimum of 20 over’s has to be bowled in a limited over game to arrive at a decision.
