5th April201l

Hon Mahindananda Aluthgamage
Minister of Sports
Ministry of Sports
Colombo 7

Honorable Sir,
We were appointed asNational Selectors in June 2010 and as you are aware ouf term ends on 30th April 2011.
When we took over our assignment our broad goal was always to hand over Sri Lanka Cricket in better shape than when we took over. Our main objectives were to see that Sri Lanka won the World Cup 2011 and also to uplift our world rankings in the Test and One Day Cricket. We also paid very high emphasis on domestic cricket, T/20 and also on developing the feeder players at Academy and A Team levels.
While, like everyone else associated with Sri Lanka Cricket we are also enormously disappointed at our not being able to annex the coveted World Cup, which was lost to India in a highly competitive final, we are very happy that we have been able to meet most of our objectives in a short space of time.
In view of the fact that some major cricketing decisions have to be taken for the future of
Sri Lanka Cricket due to important assignments in the coming months, we would like to
offer to step down immediately from the jobs of National Selectors, so that the group of
selectors you may wish to appoint, could be given an opportunity to make short and long
term plans, in the way they think it is best for our cricket.
We have had a very exciting and challenging time and must emphatically say that we greatly enjoyed the task that we considered sacred, entrusted to us. We on every occasion sought views of the team management and at the same time maintained the distance that was required in such deliberations. The decision was always independently made without fear or favor and what we thought was best for our cricket and conditions that were to be encountered.

We wish to sincerely thank His Excellency the President, and you for giving us a free hand to always use our experience and knowledge, and for the complete trust reposed in us.
We also wish to convey our appreciation to the Chairman and Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket for inviting us to play a vital role and for their confidence.
We have always had a harmonious relationship with the cricketers, and have been transparent in all our dealings with them. We appreciate their cooperation.
The job of selector is always a challenging one and we were well aware of this when we
accepted the task. The Cricketing public and media are most knowledgeable, and with every decision we have to make, having so many options, their views were appreciated and taken by us in the right spirit.
We wish Sri Lanka cricket the very best, as it is an integral part of our lives, and would reassure you, that we will always be available to do service in its development, in any capacity in the future.

Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,

Aravinda De Silva
Chairman
On behalf of National Cricket Selectors

We did well on the world cup. the better team won and respect on that!! All our sri lankan politicians should look after the country and forget about sports in my honest opinion.

  • Mana

i just like to remind who ever criticizes Sri lanka cricket and the players do not know what sports. All the countries represented in the world cup did there best to achieve. We should appreciate our team for qualifying to the final.Yes indeed some blunders happen in the selection. There were factors related to that “Mathews was injured Murali was not fit until the last moment etc. so they had to select Randiv and kapugedara. However Chaminda vass left out.i feel if they had given him a chance there would have been a definite impact along with Malinga opening the spell. We all know what a great bowler is C. Vass and his bowling has allways disturbed indian batsman in the past.He was after a stint playing for county in England. It would have been wise to utilize him because he can bat well as good as Mathews can.why not is the question. The selectors had shortlisted Jayasuriya and and vass before the world cup.Atleast, instead of Randiv who can only bowl they could have played hearth & murali along with malinga and Vass combination. If so we would have fought them better than we did.Winning or losing is not a point to discuss.Hope we see some good progressive panel of selectors who knows cricket will handle this efficiently and effectively. However Aravinda should further continue as a selector is my opinion since with all the experience and lessons he has learnt in the past would help him to make much more pro active stance towards building a proper framework for the Prosperity of cricket in Sri Lanka.Call him back.

They did a good job. Why didn’t SLC ask Aravinda to stay on and renew his contract?

  • SRILANKAN LOSERS

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Thats the second time you minnows have come to a world cup final and lost!

Whats that? You have SLINGA “Chucker” Malinga on your side.He is at worst a Beach bowler who bowls well only to uncapped Indian Players primarily being seen him for the first time.
Do you have players like M.S.DHONI,ZAHEER KHAN ,VIRAT KOHLI in your side.
you only have aging “spinning track bullies” like Sanga,Mahela and one doubt…..
    is samaaraweera a cricketer or a golfer?SO BORING……
And who do u have has an all-rounder:Angeloooooo Mathews……u must be truly spineless who you classify him as an allrounder ’cause he neither bowls more than 2 overs nor picks up any wickets and to add salt to the wound he Drops CATCHES……….

You Srilankas were made to bite the Dust on 2nd April to put a stop to your arrogant team who are stars only in your country and We Indians have no respect for them and many Indians believe that they are lions at home and lambs away.Mate have you won a “SINGLE TEST MATCH” in india, aus,sa then how can you expect to win the world cup.

I agree that Indias bowling is not top class barring Zaheer and Harbhajan and Ashwin.

Were you guys afraid to play the “MYSTERY BOWLER” mendis………………………..
Can murali really chuck on one leg ?Is he that great a bowler who nearly got banned for chucking which is very obvious.

YOU SRILANKANS ACCEPT THAT U DO NOT HAVE THE QUALITY TO WIN THE WORLD CUP……

THE BOWLING OF KULASEKARA,MALINGA,MENDIS(HAHA) MAY SCARE MINNOWS LIKE KENYA BUT ONE MUST SAY EVEN THE MUMBAI DOMESTIC RANJI TEAM CAN SCORE OFF THIS BOWLING ATTACK WHICH PROVIDES LIKE EASY FODDER…..

AND ANGELO MATHEWS THE CAPTAIN?LOOKING TO BE THE NExT DARREN SAMMY????????????

  • sunanda jayasekera

interference will destroy the game of cricket

  • Gayan Jayaratne

    it so obvious.

the selectors didn’t pick the final eleven. why would they even play chamara kapugethara instead of mendis? Why play randiv instead of herath.

their resignation and the resignation of sanga and mahela are a form of silent protest against the Hon. M Aluthgamage.

Here’s my advice, don’t put your nose into things which you know nothing about. let the selectors do their job and maybe then we can win a world cup.

  • buddi

Chamara Kapugedera was included for the final directly Without giving him a prior chance . I think most of the people aware of his batting talent and also the brilliance of fielding. As we know he is a talented opening batsman. Its a surprise that he is sending in as a low order batsman. He has given 2 chances to open the innings and he was succeed. His career should not be destroyed by doing this. The new selection committee members, at least now please use this asset in the proper place and see he will be the most technically classic and aggressive batsman in sri lankan cricket.

  • asantha punchihewa

I think Aravinda’s diction are correct. He’s better Batting coach for sri lanka team.

  • Sahan

Today as Aravida correctly pointed out, we didn’t fight until the last ball. But I would like to remind that, we used to have the mentioned fighting culture when Mahela was holing the captaincy.(The best example is, south Africa match in 2007 world cup, he correctly held back the balling power play until the last five overs and brought back Malinga, set the field correctly and let Malinga deliver the rest.) Mahela had always been a proactive, innovative captain with a good cricketing brain.

    • w s wijayasinghe

absolutely correct. Mahela was a much much better captain.

  • Ruwan

We need a new fielding coach ASAP. Our fielding standards have gone down and I don’t think Ruwan Kalpage is doing a good job although he was a good fielder.

New batting coach is also needed. If we analyze the first 15 overs of the WC final. Our openers we trying to score in one are. Cover, coverpiont and back ward point. No foot was there at all they had other options, short single, down the ground using the feet or walk to off and try to hit the on side.

Indian bowlers are not express and some one has to teach these things to the batters.

  • james

    nice one nice one.

what we need some raw young talent.

    Sangakara and Jayawardene for selectors

  • Priyantha

Yes, this Committee had big problems of selecting a good team. They should resign immediately. In the World Cup Final, Dilhara Fernado should have played. Inclusion of Kapugedara is riduculous!

Usually Indíans are very good at spin bowling. Therefore, only Murali should have played because we have some part-time spinners too. All the other bowlers should have been fast bowlers. This Committee could not understand such a simple thing!

How come Randiv in the Final, after all being not played any match before in the World Cup? It is riduculous!

This Committe waisted the World Cup! They could not live up to the expectations of the cricket loving people of Sri Lanka.

Good luck for them for their (perhaps, other) work in the future. Aravinda can concetrate on teaching cricket for the young ones. Hope he likes to do that.
