Sangakkara Resigns from Captaincy

Kumar Sangakkara informed Sri Lanka Cricket this morning that he was resigning as captain of the National Team. He will resign with immediate effect as the ODI and T20 captain, but he has spoken to the selectors and offered to continue as the Test captain on an interim basis for the forthcoming series with England and Australia if this is considered helpful for the new captain.

Kumar has requested that the following statement be released to the media today.

“I would like to announce that after careful consideration I have concluded that it is in the best long-term interests of the team that I step down now as national captain so that a new leader can be properly groomed for the 2015 World Cup in Australia.

“This was a decision I made prior to the 2011 World Cup. I will be 37 by the next World Cup and I cannot therefore be sure of my place in the team. It is better that Sri Lanka is led now by a player who will be at the peak of their career during that tournament.

“It has been a true honour and a great privilege to serve my country as captain  during the past two years and,  although bitterly disappointed that we could not win the final, I am very proud of the performances  of the team.

“I am also very grateful for the wonderful support received from Sri Lankan fans all around the world. Our supporters were a source of great inspiration before, during and after the tournament and I know all the players are extremely thankful for this.

“I met with the selectors on Monday and  I explained my reasons for my decision and I assured them of my fullest support in helping our new captain settle into the leadership.

“In this regard, I have offered to continue as the Test captain for the forthcoming series with England and possibly Australia if the selectors believe this would help the new captain and aid the transition.

“I have no plans of retirement from international cricket at this stage and subject to form and fitness I would like to be considered for selection in all three formats of the game for the foreseeable future.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team-mates and the coaching staff for their hard-work and support. I would also like to thank my wife Yehali, my young twins and family for being willing to sacrifice so much to allow me to lead the team.

It’s a sensible decision from Sanga. He has been a very good player and has also been a good leader. But age catches up on all of us (I would still like to play but am in my later 60s) and if you look at other international teams – Ponting, Tendulkar, Vettori etc. are all over 35 – there is a similar trend. Collingwood was a great servant for my team (England) and he is still a very good player but you have to be realistic. YOu can’t defy nature. It would be sensible for the SL selectors to find a new captain now and start to build. Jayawardene is also nearing retirement – heavens forbid! – and SL must rebuild now, as Australia is doing.
Incidentally my son and I are com,ing to SL to watch the first test in March – look forward to meeting a lot of new friends! Still trying to find out how to get tickets!! Not much info on the website. – Dave

  • munna

I am an Indian, but I like Srilankan team, because they r very excellent players.they are intelligent,Sanga is a captain n wicket keeper, but he should not have given up his captaincy.

    • A Fernando

Perhaps his resignation is due to political interference and not as he modestly states “age”.

      • Wobbles

I agree with you a 200%. The political interference is a menace and a spoke in the wheels. The whole country knows how and why we lost (in fact allowed India to take the WC). Money talks mate. We are a corrupt country to say the very least.

sanga should not have stepped down from captaincy. he should have stepped down from keeping wickets. he’s a good enough batsman to b in the team for his batting. he misses very crucial chances as keeper.

    2003 semifinals andrew symonds

    2007 finals adam gilchrist

    2011 final gautam ghambir

how many more misses can we afford, sanga please give up the keeping job to dinesh chandimal

  • http://n Noel

sanga is the good captain. You stay untill 2015 CWC..

  • Shana

Sanga you are the best batsman, best keeper and the best captain too.We feel very sorry for you.But we know that 2015 WC will be hold by our LIONS! ALL THE VERY BEST from every Srilankans. SANGA THE BEST. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    HE’LL BE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • frisbee

our bowlers played the last match as a none final match. they didn’t have any responsibility.

  • Rizly

yes nice to say some words about our champions.all mistake is done by selection committee nothing wrong with our heroes (sanga, mahela, lasith, mathews, murali, dilshan, tissara) except them. aravinda u said Chandimal has enough age to come to cricket u cant say if a person has talent he should be in the squad u didn’t do that unless u included useless kapugedara, chamara silva they have never played a match winning innings for Sri Lanka .if u all again included these two we won’t support for the team as well (New committee).

most of saying samaraweera can use full for grow a innings when wickets are leaking he is good test player.but u know Dravid who were in the test team didn’t included in One day team they also can include know? y ? search players who can play good big shot who can stay at the wicket and score every ball, even a sigle Like mahela jayawardena.

snaga i know All our previous Captains Except Arjuna from 1996 who had captaincy they individually didn’t perform well but u did it.u r a best captain. Dilshan short tempered he is not suitable for captaincy?

if politicians and politics comes in to cricket Sri Lanka Cricket will finished in very soon.

Mr.Dulip mendis let our players to complete the IPL dont be mad

  • w s wijayasinghe

People fabricate different stories when the team loses.Think of what Dhoni said at the post match presentation… He said that if he had lost the match everybody would have asked two questions from him; Why Sreesanth and not Ashvin & Why Dhoni ahead of Yuvraj. That’s how it goes with captainc y. Sangakkara is a great BATSMAN. There is no doubt about it. But it is questionable whether he is the BEST captain we have produced. He seems to get agitated in crisis situations. However, in the world cup squad Mahela and Sangakkara were the only guys who were apppropriate for the job. As ardent followers of cricket in this country our disappointment and grief are huge. If a Sri Lankan team which has star players like MURALI,MALINGA,MENDIS,DILSHAN,MAHELA,SANGAKKARA can’t win the world cup, when will we be able to do it? In 96 we had no great stars, but they had BIG hearts. That is exactly what we don’t see in today’s team. If you can remember the perseverce shown by players like ARAVINDA, GURUSINGHE and ARJUNA in the 96 final, you can understand the great spirit they had. Unfortunately for us, we could see that determination written all over YUVARAJ’S face in this year’s final. If he had not saved those boundaries we would have got 290-300. He lifted the whole Indian team. We should learn a lesson from his fighting spirit. There can be many IFs and BUTs.Now we have to look forward. Who can be the next captain? Do we have a matured enough player? However, a things stand at the moment it is ALMOST impossible for an Asian team to win the 2015 world cup which will be held in Australia and New Zealand. So what we missed this time is a GOLDEN OPPPRTUNITY. Though we feel very sad about it, we continue to follow cricket in our country.

  • Gayan Jayaratne

Sanga i know that you cannot openly say it but we all know you didn’t lose the cup.

we know its the stupid politicians that forced randiv and kapugethara to the team.

but you should have put T Perara right after tharanga got out. you could have also put t perara against NZ and give mathews a rest. oh well.

the final eleven should have been
    K. Sangha
    M. Jayawardena
    M. Muralitharan
    A. Mendis
    U. Tharanga
    T. Dilshan
    R. Herath
    T. Perara
    L. Malinga
    N. Kulasekara
    T. Samaraweera

    even small children know that.

the stupid politicians need to focus on running the country and not interfering and putting friends and relatives into the world cup cricket team.

    thanks a lot

  • PRAMOD RASANGA

VERRY GOOD DECISION.SANGAKKARA YOU HAVE NOT GOOD CAPTAINCY.YOU CAN NOT LEAD THE TEAM TO 2015 WORLD CUP AND YOU CAN NOT WIN IT.NOW WE CAN SEE YOU LEAD DEACCAN TEAM AND YOU LOST EVERY GAMES WHICH YOU PLAYED SO FAR.IF WE TALK ABOUY ICC WC FINAL 2011,YOU AND YOUR STAFF SOLD THE MATCH TO THE HIGH PRIZE FOR INDIA.I THINK YOU HAVE DIFFERENT PLANS BEHIND THAT DECISION,YOUR LEAVING ALSO THE RESULT OF THAT.KUMAR I THINK TIME HAS COME TO YOU TOU RETY FROM THE CRICKET AND WE CAN NOT SEE SMOE PLAYERS LIKE YOU SO ALL THE MEMBERS WHO HELPED TO YOU TO SELL THE WC FINAL FOR INDIA GOT RIGHT DECISION TO LEAVE CRICKET BOARD.KUMAR YOU MUST CLOSE YOUR INTERNATIONAL CRICKET CAREER.

    • Sahan

As you say, if he has done such a thing, he should any way resign. Also even if he has not done such a thing, still he has to resign, because as i have been reasoning out, he was a poor captain who relied on others performance and his other stuff apart from cricket.

    • PRAMOD RASANGA

      I LIKE IT

    • Dil

R u mad? U cannt say like ds. U dnt knw whatz d truth. When u knw it, u vl late

Sanga u wre the best Captain we ever had.Why did u choose to go now ,your quitting is causing a major breakdown after the worldcup.I understand that u might not be in the team in the 2015 worldcup,so u r correct to give the new captain some time get used to the captaincy and all.But u shouldve waited atleast till the IPL matches were over.Anyway good luck with IPL.We r glad that u desided to stay as captain for the test matches.Good luck with your future.U will always be the the best wicket keeper, the best cptain and our best man.WE ALL LUV U. I think that Dilshan and Mathews r the most suitable for the captaincy. But i agree that Dilshan is a bit aggresive and hot tempered so i think that Mathews, despite his lack of experienced,Will be a brilliant captain for the 2015 team. After all he is known to be the future captain.Plus Dishan will be 38 in 2015,so will he be in the team by then ?,theres no garantee. SANGA WE LOVE U AND MATHEWS U R OUR NEXT CAPTAIN.GOOD LUCK cutie.

  • Priyantha

On the graounds of the team selction for the Final WC 2011, of which Sanga was a part, he must resign as the team that played in the final is not acceptable by any means.

so, due to this riduculous act not one regarding the team selection should continue in his post. Quite rightly both Selction Committee and Captain have resigned.

Through the toothless act and many others, SL lost the WC2011

SL team had no any SIGNIFICANT fighting spirit in the Final. Note the word SIGNIFICANT. One can say we had faighting spirit which is of course true but it was no way near being SIGNIFICANT

  • hana

sanga NO pls dnt resign……. u are a bst captain………. v SRI LANKANS need u as the captain 4 our team………….. pls sanga……….

  • Naushid

Your reason is kinda considerable but then you should have resign at once :-( you were the best captain of all but then its really unfair to resign because of loosing the world cup for us the world cup is nothing compared to you !! Please just for your loving fans :-( don’t resign for now :-( you still need to build up our team as a Captain so just for another to years try to stick with it please :-( we hope you do it because its not only my like almost the whole Sri Lankan Lions needs you please change your decision for your fans if you do love us in return !!
