Bangladesh under 19s who were eliminated in the tri nation series, did well to beat hosts Sri Lanka who have already qualified to play the Pakistanis in the finals scheduled at the P. Sara stadium on Tuesday.
Today Sri Lanka under 19s was well and truly out played by the young Bangladeshis. Bangladesh as a nation is not the big boys of test or one day cricket but at fewer than 19 levels they certainly match up with the rest.
Sri Lanka who have already qualified for the finals were not at full strength, for today’s game, however credit must go to the Bangladesh youth for giving an excellent display when chasing Sri Lanka’s defendable target 0f 235.
The only Sri Lankan who was out standing in today’s game was young KDK Vithanage who made 83 but got himself run out; knowing very well that the three figure mark was his for the taking.
Young Vithanage was associated in two big partnerships for 2nd and the 5th wicket. The young man batted well along side Rajapakse who finally came good making 30 after being used as an opener. The pair made a valuable contribution of 82 runs for the 2nd wicket. Vithanage then joined AN Nanayakara and put on 51 runs for the 5th wicket which enabled the home team to reach 234.
Bangladeshi batsman got among the runs. Nurul Hassan and Mominul Haq’s partnership of 91 for the 3rd wicket paved the way for a good Bangladeshi Chase. On hindsight Bangladesh came good too late in the tournament. They were unlucky that they lost their first outing to Sri Lanka at Pallekela on D/L method. They were comprehensively beaten by Pakistan and fell victims of Mother Nature’s wrath at Dambulla last Wednesdays when play was abandon without a ball being bowled.
Today they reached the target against Sri Lanka with 5 wickets in hand with 27 balls to spare.
Sri Lanka 234 for 7 wickets in 50 overs
Bangladesh 235 for 5 wickets in 45.2 overs
Finals will be played between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at the P Sara Stadium on 8th December.
