Sri Lanka & India set for a dress rehearsal

For the hosts to qualify for the finals with Sri Lanka will be a hard task. They lack penetrative bowlers to do the job for them. Shakib, the Bangladeshi captain will have to hope that Sri Lanka win their game against India tomorrow, then turn Dhaka upside down by beating India with a bonus point. With all due respect to Shakib Al Hassan and his team, he will need a miracle to achieve this feat against the likes of the Shewags, Gambirs of this world, run hungry Kholis, Yuvrajs and of course the bottom handed Dhoni.

Sri Lanka is into the finals, India will not want to leave it for the Bangladesh game, and hence they will come all guns firing. Sangakkara knows very well if he could stick to his game plan, do the basics right don’t do any experiments by batting first if winning the toss, India will then have to open full throttles, with a back to back game due on Monday.

Dhoni is man sitting in the hot seat here. He needs a win badly, for three pertinent reasons. Number one he would like to rotate some players and need be, rest some of  his key players before the finals, secondly to break Sri Lanka’s winning habits and thirdly, be counted on the big stage recording  an even stevens  record against their fellow finalist in this competition.

Sri Lanka will want to win badly, keep the winning habit afloat, by doing this; they will create immense pressure on India to open full throttles against Bangladesh in their back to back encounter.

Will Dilshan have a game tomorrow? On hind sight don’t be surprised if he does. If he is fit, he will love to have a knock in a non pressure game, and get the feel of the middle which has eluded him due to an intermediate injury. Jayawardena on the other hand will like to face quality bowling, hence the team and the batting line up for Sri Lanka will be interesting reading.

Bandara will love to bowl at quality batsmen and see how he goes with his variety of sliders, googlies and even the occasional top spinner, with which he has been very miserly in experimenting.

That man Shewag looks hungry, so are Gautham and Yuvraj. Harbajan blows hot against quality sides. One reckons the outing against Bangladesh did not offer him the challenges he envisages. He knows in the back of his mind he will have to bowl against top quality batsmen who are right up there in world rankings.

Till we say hello tomorrow I leave you with the thoughts of Sunil Gavaskar. “ONCE DILSHAN IS BACK THE SRI LANKANS WILL BE A FORMIDABLE OUTFIT”.
