Despite mounting a sizable total of 170 for 7 wickets in 20 overs, Sri Lanka went down to India due to the bowling attack lacking the fire power with Indian skipper Virat Kohli once again lifting India having lost 2 wickets for 42 in the solitary T20 at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.
Sri Lanka’s decent total after being put in to bat by India, was built mainly, thanks to a blistering 29-ball 53 by Dilshan Munaweera batting at No.3 containing 5 boundaries and 4 sixes having lost skipper Tharanga with the total on 23. A. Priyanjans added luster with an unbeaten 40 off 40 balls inclusive of 1 boundary and 2 sixes. After Angelo Mathew’s departure making it 62 for 3 in 6.3 overs,Munaweera and Priyanjan put on 37 in 5.2 overs before the former was bowled by Kuldip Yadav with the total on 99 in 11.2 overs.
Having lost both Tisara Perera and Dasun Shanaka for ducks Sri Lanka was reduced to 113 for 6 with Y.S. Chahal accounting for both. Priyanjan, debuting in T20 cricket, then accelerated adding 21 for the seventh wicket with Seekuge Prasanna who made 11 off 8 with a boundary. Priyanjan did find an able ally in Isuru Udana as the duo were associated in an unbroken 36 runs for the eighth wicket. Udana’s contribution was 19 off 10 balls and struck 2 boundaries and a six.
When India batted Sri Lanka struck two early blows dismissing Rohit Sharma for 9 caught Tisara Perera bowled Lasith Malinga for 9 and it was 1 for 22. Then spinner Seekuge Prasanna accounted for K.L. Rahul who was caught by Shanaka for 24 and India were 2 for 42 in 5.4 overs and Sri Lanka was on ball. But as usual skipper Virat Kohli changed the complexion of the game striking a whirlwind 82 off 54 balls inclusive of 7 boundaries and a six. When Kohli fell India was on the doorstep of victory on 161 off 18.3 overs and M.K. Pandey and M. Dhoni polished off the balance runs with India closing on 173 for 3 wickets in 19.2 overs. Chahal claimed 3 wickets for 43 and Yadav 2 for 20. Kohli capped the tour with double awards of the Man of the Match and Man of the Series.
