Sri Lanka lose to Bangladesh in the first game of the Asia Cup

Sri Lanka lost to Bangladesh in their first game in the Asia Cup 2018 played today by 137 runs; as they faltered for 124 runs, chasing a target of 261 in 50 0vers.

Upul Tharanga and Kusal Mendis opened the innings for the Lankans, but Mendis was sent back quickly; when the score was on 22, then soon Tharanga, who was looking extremely good, as he made a brisk 27 from 16 balls with four boundaries and a six fell for a Mashrafe Mortaza delivery. Dhananjaya De Silva and Kusal Perera also departed early; and the Lankan scoreboard read as 4 for 38.

Angelo Mathews and Dasun Shananka was trying to repair the innings, but a mix-up saw Shanaka going back to the pavilion for just 7 runs; after being runout, while within few more balls; Angelo Mathews was out for 16 runs. Thisara Perera also was out before he reached his double figures.

Dilruwan Perera was the top scorer for Sri Lanka as he made 29, while Suranga Lakmal contributed 20 runs.

In bowling for Bangladesh; Mustafizur Rahman; Mashrafe Mortaza and Mehidy Hasan captured two wickets each to help destroy the Lankan innings.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh batting first; after winning the toss, saw some early scare as Lasith Malinga, who was coming back to international cricket after a lapse of one year, removed Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan in consecutive deliveries, in the first over of the game and also the tournament. However, a 133 runs partnership between Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun, saw Bangladesh coming back into the game. Mithun made 63, before Malinga once again struck to remove the third wicket of Bangladeshis.

Mithun’s departure saw Bangladesh against starting to crumble, but a solid 144 runs from Muhifiqur Rahim, saw their score reaching up to 261, (in 49.3 overs) thus giving it’s bowlers a chance to go at the Lankans with some freedom. Bangladeshi opener Tamim Iqbal retired hurt, after facing just 4 balls.

For Sri Lanka, it was Lasith Malinga, who was the pick of the bowlers, as he captured 4 wickets by just conceding 23 runs in 10 overs, while Dhananjaya De Silva captured two wickets for 38 runs in 7 overs.

Player of the Match Award went to Mushfiqur Rahim for his 144 runs, which helped build the Bangladesh innings.
