Sri Lanka continued to look mightily impressive as they overwhelmed opponents Japan with an outstanding performance, winning by 10 wickets in its match at Merrion.
Japan batted first scoring 21 in 18.1 overs, the only batter to make any significant contribution was Ayako Nakayama scoring 12 runs. The Sri Lanka bowling attack were in fine form bowling as a unit and sharing the wickets around. Eshani Kaushalya (5 for 2), Sripali Weerakkody (2 for 2) and Chandima Gunaratne (2 for 2) all put in professional performances.
Sri Lanka managed to score the winning runs in 1.4 overs, Yasoda Mendis (18) scoring 4 fours and Jayangani (4) confirming victory for the Sri Lankan team and a semi-final spot.
Captain, Shashikala Siriwardene was delighted with the performance, ‘We wanted to keep them under 30 runs, our fast bowlers did really well and it was a great effort by our spinners. We aimed to bat losing no wickets, so I was very happy with the whole performance. We will be ready for the next match against Ireland and hope to keep the momentum going,” said Siriwardene.
