Sri Lanka seals ODI series whitewash after Kusal ton

Sri Lanka trumped Bangladesh by six wickets in their third and final One-Day International at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday (February 22) to sweep the series 3-0.

Dhammika Prasad claimed three wickets in his first match of the series as Bangladesh, who was sent in to bat, was restricted to 240 for 8 in its 50 overs. Kusal Perera, the opener, then hit his maiden ODI century as Sri Lanka passed the target with 15 deliveries to spare.

Mominul Haque top scored with a run-a-ball 60, while valuable contributions from Nasir Hossain (38), Naeem Islam (32) and the captain Mushfiqur Rahim (30), gave Bangladesh its highest score of the series.

But Kusal Perera made light of the target as he flayed Bangladesh’s attack till the 40th over before Rubel Hossain bowled him for 106. Rubel dismissed Dinesh Chandimal in his next over to make it 205 for 4, but the Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews brought up the win with a six off Naeem.

Kusal Perera’s knock included six fours and five sixes. He shared a third-wicket stand of 138 with Chandimal, who scored 64.

Sri Lanka took the field without any of its three veterans – Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan – for the first time in an ODI since 1999. Jayawardene and Dilshan were nursing injuries, while Sangakkara was rested ahead of the five-nation Asia Cup, which starts in Bangladesh on Tuesday.

The bowling was also weakened in the absence of Lasith Malinga, who was given a break, and the injured duo of Nuwan Kulasekara and Rangana Herath.

Bangladesh missed Shakib Al Hasan, who was handed a three-match ban for a lewd on-camera gesture during the second ODI on Thursday.
