Sri Lanka U19′s beat India U19 in rain hit game

The second warm up game at Christ’s college in Christchurch between Sri Lanka and India was reduced to 26 overs due rain. A maximum of 6 overs per bowler was the ruling for the fielding side, in this restricted warm up encounter.

Sri Lanka who thumped Hongkong by a big margin of 90 runs took first lease of the pitch after winning the toss.

Andri Berenger the centurion in yesterdays match was out cheaply for 5 runs. The only substantial partnership was between deputy skipper Kithruwan Vithanage and Rumesh Buddika who put on 62 for the 3rd wicket.

Rumesh made 37 off 50 deliveries with two boundaries while the left hander Kithruwan was the aggressor scoring three hits to the ropes in his quick fire 31 off 27 balls. Danishka Gunathilake contributed 35 off 31 balls with one four and a six to help Sri Lanka make 163 for 9 wickets in their allotted 26 overs. The lower order was not impressive in this outing losing 4 wickets for 2 runs.

For the Indian under 19s seam bowlers Jayadev Unadkat and Saurav Netrawalkar were impressive bagging 5 wickets between themselves for 53 runs. The young Indians given a relatively easy target of 164 in 26 overs fell short by 7 runs despite a 56 run opening stand between Mayank Agarwal and Rahul Kannaur.

Mayank made 45 off 31 balls with five boundaries. Running between wickets, let India down in their run chase as two players namely opener Rahul Kannaur and Mandeep Singh were both found wanting. Opener Kannaur was run out for 22 while in form Mandeep fell short of the popping crease for 27.

India looked on course for victory with skipper Ashok Menairia, batting on 20, however Maduka Liyanapathiranage put the Indians on the back foot when he had their skipper comprehensively bowled for 20. India lost 6 wickets and fell shot by 7 runs to record 156 for 6 wickets in 26 overs.

Sri Lanka plays their first world cup game on the 17th when they take on group participants Zimbabwe.
