Sri Lanka U19s Scrape Through in Nail Biting Finish

By Brian Thomas

Sri Lanka under 19s showed their maturity by pulling off a sensational 7 run win against the visiting Pakistani under 19s in a dress rehearsal final out at the Moratuwa international stadium today.

Taking first lease of the wicket the Sri Lankan top order were completely at bay, with Pakistan bowlers getting wickets at will. Thanks to a late burst  by  DDM Rajakaruna’s  35 and skipper Chaturanga’s  34, the home team managed to reach 182 before being bowled out in the 48th over.

Pakistan was no better. The top orders batted poorly and at one stage were struggling on 74 for 5 wickets in the 19th over.

At the start of over number 34 defeat was inevitable for the Pakistanis, since they lost their 8th wicket with the score on 131.  However Wicket keeper Mohamed Awais had different ideas. The young wicket keeper batting at number 8 made quick a fire 65, and took the visitors close to the target of 183.

The Pakistanis still had 18 balls left to score 7 runs. Awais battimng on 65 lost concentration going for a big hit and was bowled by young  Rajaguru  much to the delight of a shell-shocked Sri Lankan team who breathed a sigh of relief.

Great game and the finals scheduled for 8th of this month will be exciting.
