West Indian Women out played Sri Lanka in the first T20 encounter at St Mary’s Park in Cayon to go one up in the three match series.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Sri Lanka women managed only 103 runs in their allotted 20 overs. None of the Sri Lankan batswomen was able to settle down against a well organized Caribbean attack led by Shanan Daley who captured 3 wickets for 14 runs in her allotted 4 overs which included a maiden.
Sri Lanka Women lost four of their top order batters for a paltry 32 runs. The score board read 58 runs for 7 wickets in 12.1 overs, and Sri Lanka were looking down the barrel to be bowled out inside the allotted 20 overs to less than a score of 100. However thanks to a late revival by wicket keeper Deepika Rasangika and lower order batters Sandamali Dolawatte Sri Lanka managed to bat the 20 overs and secure a modest score of 103 for 9 wickets.
The Caribbean women had no difficulty in reaching the modest target. They won this game by 6 wickets and 9 balls to spare. Rosemarie Taylor made an excellent 50 while Cordel Jack showed her class with a breezy 23.
The second T20 game is scheduled to be played on the 23rd, Sri Lanka will have to up their game to be competitive. The running between wickets by the Sri Lankan’s was poor since 4 players were run out including the skipper Chamani Seneviratne.
