Left hand batsmen Yannik Cariah played a match winning innings of 110 not out to help his team beat Sri Lanka in the 3rd place play-off match at Christchurch this morning. The young left hander who came into bat at the fall of the 2nd wicket batted through, the innings to guide his team to a 3rd place ranking in this years under 19s World Cup tournament. Sri Lanka bowlers were hit for ten sixes by the Caribbean batsmen while defending their score of 291 for 6 wickets after being asked to bat on a very good pitch.
Experts stated that the West Indian Captain had made the wrong decision as the Sri Lankan openers made 174 runs for the first wicket with opener Denuwan Rajakaruna playing in his first World Cup match stroking a scintillating 94, while his partner Udara Jaysundera a well compiled 77.
Sri Lanka made a defendable total of 291 for 6 wickets with useful contributions from Bhanuka Rajapakse who made an unbeaten 43 and Rumesh Buddika an aggressive knock of 34. The West Indian bowlers were carted to all sides of the park after opting to bowl first on a placid pitch.
Sri Lanka stuck early.Chathura Peiris dismissed both openers with the score on 6. John Campbell and Yannik Cariah batted well and scored freely in their 120 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket. After the dismissal of John Campbell for 77, Cariah and Shane Dowrich shared a 49 run partnership for the 4th wicket.
The West Indians lost two quick wickets as Sri Lanka grabbed the initiative, thanks to Nadeera Rajaguru who accounted for two scalps with his leg breaks, but cariah stuck to his task of remaining at the wickets.
Yannik Cariah and Jermaine Blackwood took their team close to the target as they played very good cricket by pushing the ball into gaps and punishing all the loose deliveries on offer to the boundary in their 92 run partnership, for the 6th wicket. Cariah the dominant partner remained unbeaten on 110 and was adjudicated as the man of the match.
Sri Lanka will be disappointed with their effort, the bowling was poor, they bowled 4 no balls and 11 wides, and on hindsight this could have caused extra pressure in defending the total.
West Indies are now ranked 3rd in this years under 19s World cup while Sri Lanka will be placed 4th.

Where was Denuwan Rajakaruna before? We persisted with Andri Berenger in the crucial match against Australia and lost the match. Before that match, his record was poor. Surely the management should have known this better.
